So is, "Why would you say something like that?" asked in a mildly quizzical voice.

So is taking them literally - to the point of concreteness - and asking questions based on your literal assumptions. [bragging on self] I was once at a dinner where a person persisted in telling offensive jokes. (Not dirty jokes, mind you - that might have been okay. Although he wasn't a very good joke teller. Mostly racist jokes.) Finally he asked a "riddle": What's the most beautiful sight in the world? Answer: All the n****** swimming back to Africa with a Mexican under each arm. I did the blank stare, then asked, "Why would the Mexicans want to go to Africa?" as if I really didn't understand and honestly wanted to know. That stopped the jokes. [/bragging on self]
 
If they're a white american you should suggest they go back to whatever european country they originated from and leave place to the true natives.

I know, right? That kind of person never seems to think of that. AND never seems to consider that a large number of Black people are in the U.S. as a result of their ancestors' having been forcibly transplanted.

You can, it's just very hard. You have to beat hard enough to knock other things out of them too, like bits of brain and bone and various fluids.


Okay, kidding aside, my personal theory is many of these people know the stuff they spew is crap, but they get off on a feeling of power from making someone lose it.

I personally would advise anyone who felt they might lose it to just take a break for a while and try to get perspective. In the end, the CTers are losers and it's not worth investing too much of yourself in them. While it's certainly worthwhile to prevent these hateful ideas from spreading and gaining wider acceptance, you have to go into it understanding that the CTer himself is like a drunk person or a mentally handicapped child, they may not be capable of ever learning better.

I think the dumbest ones are the british racists who don't want any other races coming over and mixing with their anglo-saxon blood. Hello? What do you think "anglo-saxon" means? It means you're already mixed race!
 
I think if you physically harm a white supremacist for being a white spremacist you are committing a "hate crime" in addition to a "crime/crime" and can get a double-whammy in court.
 
Speaking as a pacifist, a Jew and a relatively calm person, I prefer to listen intently and follow their assumptions and statements to their contradictory logical consequences.
Failing that, I ignore them.

I don't know what the US is like, but in Australia our conservative Prime Minister has made it quite clear that 'Politically Correct' is finished. The net effect is that racism in general is on the rise. He has actively encourage racist attitudes to many groups. If Jewish people are caught up in the swing, it doesn't surprise me at all.

I don't why you and one other post equates being conservative with being antisemitic. Left-wing communist Russia was antisemitic in the 20th century. I do not believe that either wing is immune from such hatred.

No, he hasn't. Pauline Hanson called for the active removal of Asian people from Australia, as well as the total cessation of all immigration from Asian countries. She also called for the complete removal of all government funding to Aboriginal causes, along with the withdrawing of Australia from the UN, reinstitution of protectionist economic policies and the ending of political correctness.

Whilst I feel physically ill in defending that odorous piece of slime, John Howard, he's not a complete moron. He's quite a smart politician and his economic advisers are pretty good. He would definitely never say anything racist himself, he'd lose his seat well and truly.

Personally, I do think he is racist, but he's too smart a pollie to be caught espousing his personal views in public.

IMHO there is, with some people, a knee-jerk reaction against political correctness. There was a thread about Michael Richards' outburst involving the "N word," and some posters said that people shouldn't be so sensitive about words; they don't have magic powers. But of course there are good reasons to be sensitive about rhetoric involving race and ethnicity and religion, etc. I like a lot of things (art, comedy, flims, etc.) that many would consider politically incorrect, but I respect it when people complain of being offended--just because I may not be offended by something, doesn't mean someone else shouldn't be. We all are offended by something, but it's different for different people. I don't think speech should be restricted, and that goes for people making what some consider to be offensive remarks, as well as others complaining about those remarks.

Howard hasn't mentioned Jews that I know of. Hanson see AUP above and me below.


Howard has offended Catholics (a throwaway remark as part of a jokey sidecomment in parliament) and East Asians (he questioned the scale of Asian migration in the 1980s but apologised long ago, not least because he needs their votes and donations) and Aborigines (I am not sure of any specific comments but he has taken reconciliation off the agenda and doesn't devote much time to their plight).

He also regularly offends Muslims (in the same way that Bush, Blair, et al do). Again I am not sure of any specific comments.

I would be interested to hear of any other comments he has made.

In general, John Howard seems to have formed his view of the world in the 1950s when Australia was a LOT more homogenous than it is now. I am not sure that he is comfortable with the modern multicultural Australia. I am not sure that he even recognises that it is not a bad thing that different communities have different needs and aspirations. This is good to the extent that he ignores the special pleadings and pork barrelling requests of various cultural groups but bad because (for instance) the special needs of Aborigines are often overlooked as are the difficulties migrants have in settling into Australian society. Of course he does listen to the special pleadings and pork barrelling requests of certain industries (media, farming, automotive, textile, private education).

Pauline Hanson is bizarre. She appears to vacumn up enormous numbers of conspiracy theories and odd ideas. She consults widely but appears to have no critical thinking skills. This means she believes whatever people tell her no matter how stupid and how contradictory.

I have heard here spout any number of weird conspiracy theories about everything from rice (we import it to get us used to the taste) to the Port Arthur massacre (staged). I haven't heard her mention Jews but her former advisor was happy to call himself a National Socialist and some of her former candidates were anti-semitic.
