LOS ANGELES, April 12, 2007 (UPI) -- A spokesman for Alzheimer's patients said U.S. TV talk show host Larry King may owe an apology for his recent remarks about the disease.

Patrick Moffett, author of an Alzheimer's book, in a news release called on King to apologize for insensitive remarks about Alzheimer's disease he made during a recent interview with The New York Times. At one point he said he would retire "(if), God forbid, I had an onset of dementia or Alzheimer's. That would be it."

"I'm still a Larry King fan," Moffett said. "I just think he should be a little more sensitive about Alzheimer's for the sake of all of us that are dealing with this dreadful disease."

Moffett is the author of "Ice Cream in the Cupboard," which discusses the difficulties for both patient and caregiver, especially in early onset Alzheimer's.
Can someone please explain to me what's supposed to be insensitive about this comment?

i am offended by your lack of sensitivity about larry's lack of sensitivity, i would like to petition for your removal from JREF :)

much silliness....

The complainants are likely to forget the offence :)

It is a corollary to: The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs.

I just googled Patrick Moffett and the only references I found to him were connected with either the demand for an apology or his book. Didn't find anything regarding any organization he might represent, so it's probably a stretch to identify him as "a spokesman for Alzheimer's patients." More like a guy pimping a book, I'd say.

(emphasis mine)
If I had to guess, it would be that Moffett thinks King is suggesting that people with Alzheimer's or dementia have no reason to go on. I think Moffett's being hypersensitive, but people with axes to grind tend to be that way.

Surprisingly, perhaps, I have no idea what was supposed to be offensive about it. Just saying, essentially, "Gee, I hope I never get that, because it would...." kill his career? Mean he couldn't work? Well, yeah, sooner or later, it probably would, and if you knew you were afflicted, you'd probably want to retire. Unless you're the president.... ;)

I presume because Larry is still denying his own alzheimer's? I mean that is the reason why he keeps forgetting agreements he has made live on air?

And you save alot of money when you can get the same Christmas presents every year :)

I will retire from the forums if, god forbid, I develop a severe case of leprosy and my fingers fall off.

If there's one thing we learned from the Imus comment, its that insensitivity == racism. You just have to work up enough offended people and Larry will gone.

I'm absolutely offended by your insensitivity to leprosy and people who have leprosy, not to mention gangrene and frostbite victims and clumsy shop teachers. In fact, I have hired someone with leprosy to finish this for me. Sp ag yoe cik see, itg no laiejg moaatle.

Wait, you want me to stop someone from going after Larry King?
