Imus be an idiot . . .

How weak of all of you.

Yes, how weak.

She was discriminated against because of her heritage, and forced out of a store thanks to prejudice, while having a racial slur hurled against her. "Weak."

I'm glad that you support bigotry. So, a bigot and a troll, all at once. :)

I can see how Don Imus was "trying to be funny" and how it was all a bad joke. That said, Hemus be an idiot for in this day and age calling a group of black women "nappy-headed hos".

That's like calling a group of Jewish women "big-nosed b"tches" or a group of Asian women "yellow, squinty-eyed dragon ladies" or a group of Latin women "dumpy welfare mamasitas".

Yes. You can't go around simply describing people what they actually truly look like, even if they look like that. That is indeed fascinating isn't it?

Indians in my part have put up one helluva stink over white man's authority and gall to use an Indian moniker for a highshool and sports team. And look at Marquette University who had to cave into the pressure and get rid of the Warriors name even though many such schools have actually argued that they are actually HONORing the American Indian.

Ethnic and racial groups just love to join forces and see if they can push their agenda through. That is what it is all really about.

I get a kick out of watching all these talk shows, like on FOX and CNN (especially FOX though) at night over these issues as the liberal and conservative 'guests' never agree on one single thing the other person says, and are in constant defend and attack mode. That is what it is all about. Everybody wants to show that they have some better I.Q. and can out debate someone else and as soon as that other person opens their yap...no matter what comes out of it, the other person from the otherside has to try to shoot down every single thing that other person says. It is really a 'hoot' as Laura Ingraham said on her morning radio show. I sit there at night with my beer in hand and just grin. It is really entertainment at it's finest. :) I maybe missed it but I am just dying to hear what Ann Coulter has to say.

Please explain how they look like "hos", and also explain how many have nappy hair.

Demonstrate evidence, or retract your claim.

Then, demonstrate that "nappy-haired" does not have racist connotations, and that "hos" does not have misogynistic connotations. Dustin claims he has done this, but he has failed utterly and just doesn't know it.

Further, if you want to get down to the details of "describing how someone looks like", given the examples above, prove this:

1) ALL JEWISH WOMEN ARE BIG-NOSED B****S. -- Okay. Prove all Jewish women have big noses, or even an entire group that all have big noses. Then, further, explain how they are female dogs. If they are not female dogs, the term is derogatory, and no manner of bullspitting will get you out of that.

2) ALL ASIAN WOMEN ARE YELLOW, SQUINTY-EYED DRAGON LADIES. -- Okay. Prove that Jewish women are dragons. If you cannot, then there is a suggestive connotation here. Please explain to the rest of the class what that means, please? Back it up, too.

3) ALL LATIN WOMEN ARE DUMPY WELFARE MAMASITAS. -- Okay. What describes appearance here? Oh, that's right! Nothing at all! Go fig. So prove that all latin women are dumpy, live on welfare, etc.

Guys, guys, look at the video of it again. It's clear that he's fishing for something funny to say about the game and that it's a joke that fell flat.

Bill Maher defended Don Imus on Scarbourgh's show by pointing out that sometimes when as a comedian enspeciallt one on live air you try stuff out and it sometimes doesn't work.

Irrelevant to most of the arguments in this thread.

He went too far. He pissed people off. He admitted guilt.

Referring to a ladies college basketball team as whores is offensive to them, their University, and to their families. I hope you all realize there were some fair skinned gals on the team. I note that one of them was speaking last night on the news (on the ESPN News, one could not get away from that damned story) regarding how Mr Imus did not even know any of them personally.

Misogyny is just the tip of the iceberg, but it's the insult that the whole team could get equally pissed about.

DR

My question: Were the majority on that team nappy haired or not? If they were...THEN what? One isn't allowed to tell someone what they actually have? Does this mean that the offended person is bothered by being exactly that which was stated?...as if they are not proud of what they were born with?

The "ho" part of the 'joke'?: Welll...we all know that Imus had no way of knowing whether any were whores or not, and simply added that word as something he thought clever (and of the times) to add to the first part.

So the "ho" part was an obviously offensive portion, and "nappy-headed" was not?

Sorry, don't buy it. Next?

Aren't blacks born with frizzly hair?
There is my evidence.

Regarding the Jewish women. Let me ask YOU something. What would make someone think they as a group in general have big noses? Ummm. Maybe it is because they do? And out of curiousity, I wonder what ethnic backround Barbara Streisand is. I always simply took a guess. Maybe I've been wrong with my guess.

I've been called plenty in my life. Usually what I have been physically called has been true. I lived with it. You deal with it. Perhaps one should be proud of who they are rather than pretend that is not what they are.

The bitches part is a made-up slam. That part tacked onto the first part simply is spewed by someone maybe bent on causing trouble or trying for a cheap laugh. If the person being addressed knows they aren't bitches, why do they so worry about it and get bent out of shape? And surely they must know that most people know that there is no way anybody could know who is a bitch or not.

This stuff is just silly. "Oooohh...my feelings are so hurt!" Ya right. Ah shudddduppp and get a life.

2. Ummm...are Asians considered "yellow" or aren't they? Enough said. The last part of the slam again is for sensation. Who cares? Any thinking person like me knows it was just for effect. A laugh. Soemone is trying to be cute.

What do you propose?... we shut everyone up? Fine em? Take away their jobs? Jail em? Where do we start? Where do we BEGIN? (When so many famous people did it all the time in the past) Take comedians off stage? Don't people in the audience (including us watching on tv) actually laugh at such audacity because they know what the comedian is actually right?...but that that the comedian really shouldn't be saying those things?...so we laugh as a kid would laugh if someone farted in church during the sermon?. Look at the minstrel shows. Don Rickles. Archie Bunker on All in the Family, etc., etc.

3. Hmmm. I am not sure about this one. Haven't heard. But I bet there is a glimmer of truth in there somewheres, just as I bet there is a higher number than the norm (of society in general) of Indians who are drunks on the Indian reservation.

"Next" you say? No...since you are on my case, how about you come up with something next and I'll see if I can answer. How's that?

Exactly! Poor Imus. He'll probably have to sell his house and cars now. Maybe auction off that hat of his.

There is my evidence.

Isn't there a wealth of evidence that "nappy-headed" is also used as a racially derogatory statement? Woops. There is my evidence. I consider it stronger than yours.

Regarding the Jewish women. Let me ask YOU something. What would make someone think they as a group in general have big noses? Ummm. Maybe it is because they do?

Every single one?

I bet you think that all Japanese look like this: http://www.superdickery.com/propaganda/9.html

I've ben called plenty in my life. Usually what I have been physically called has been true. I lived with it. You deal with it. Perhaps one should be proud of who they are rather than pretend that is not what they are.

Do you really think that the word "n****r" is respectful at all? That it does not tie back to the KKK and black hangings?

The bitches part is a made-up slam. That part tacked onto the first part simply is spewed by someone maybe bent on causing trouble.

Like... say... "hos"?

Man, your argument stinks.

Ya right. Ah shudddduppp and get a life.

Okay.

Next time I insult you and your race, and call you a prostitute on radio to millions of people, I will suggest that you cannot be offended.

2. Ummm...are Asians considered "yellow" or aren't they? Enough said.

Why yes! Look here: http://www.superdickery.com/propaganda/5.html

All Japanese look bright yellow, sure sah!

The last part of the slam again is for sensation. Who cares? Any thinking person like me knows it was just for effect. A laugh. Soemone is trying to be cute.

Any thinking person can also see the derogatory meaning behind it. I guess that implies you're not very good at thinking, just like you're implying that I'm not.

What do you propose?... we shut everyone up?

No.

No.

Take away their jobs?

No.

No.

Where do we start?

Who's "we"?

Where do we BEGIN?

Who's "we"?

(When so many fanous people did it all the time in the past)

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, and he was famous. This does not make slavery justified.

George Washington refused to let blacks serve in his military. That does not make his action justifiable in modern society.

Take comedians off stage?

Through legal maneuvering? No.

Don't people in the audience (including us watching on tv) actually laugh at such audacity because they know what the comedian is actually right?

People laughed at racist "n****r" jokes too. That doesn't make them true any moreso than me joking about how much a retard you are makes you retarded.

...but that that the comedian really shouldn't be saying those things?

That is up for every individual to decide. If I don't like something, I can not listen to it, or I can speak out against it. That is me exercising my free speech.

...so we laugh as a kid would laugh if someone farted in church during the sermon?

And the owners of the church have every right to kick that child out for farting. The humor aspect is irrelevant.

Look at the minstrel shows. Don Rickles. Archie Bunker on All in the Family, etc., etc.

Irrelevant.

3. Hmmm. I am not sure about this one. Haven't heard. But I bet there is a glimmer of truth in there somewheres, just as I bet there is a higher number than the norm (of society in general) of Indians who are drunks on the Indian reservation.

Are you replying to number three on my list? That was in reference to Latinos. Latinos are not Native Americans.

I am not saying that there should be any form of legal pressure here. I don't think anyone is. GroundStrength suggested that Al Sharpton was, but has yet to provide evidence (which I'm eagerly awaiting).

This is the order of events:

1) Don Imus makes a tactless, tasteless joke calling a group of young women a bunch of "nappy-headed hos". They were not prostitutes, making this an undeserved insult.

2) The group takes offense, and the NAACP and NOW get involved, proclaiming it a racist and misogynistic statement. Al Sharpton becomes involved as well. They threaten a boycott, which essentially states, "I will not buy this product as I do not agree with it", in a more organized way. This is free speech in the market.

3) Investors consider Don Imus a liability, and back out with their funding.

4) Don Imus is fired by MSNBC.

The government was not involved, nor was "censorship" of any kind. If Don Imus wants to find someone willing to hire him on, there will be little to no interference except that of monetary value, but that alone is not an argument. Many poor people are unable to get their messages out because they cannot afford to, and can't find investors; there is nothing in the government that requires you to have such.

Free speech allows you to say what message you want. It does not guarantee you a forum for your speech. Period.

MSNBC provided a forum for Don Imus' speech. Many disagreed with that speech, and thus threatened to not fund MSNBC through an organized boycott. Investors got scared and pulled out; if you want to blame anyone, you should blame them.

Yes, because there is absolutely no chance he will ever find a job, and he's not already practically a millionaire.

Poor poor Imus, can't afford that new yacht.

OMG!!! Lonewolf. I have a job you know. Wow.
Regarding you wondering if my response to #3. was for Latinos. Yes it was.

Let's get to the nitty of the gritty and talk about racial slurs. Maybe I have a problem. Maybe it is because I am not black and don't walk in their shoes. I just can't get all upset over racial slurs...especially the ones like Imus hurled where us (as the listener) know as there is no way he personally knew these girls. He said something definitely off color thinking he hit a home run and instead it got caught by the outfielder. He knew his reputation is that of a shock jock and likely would get a free pass.

So what's the problem if everyone knows this is the kind of stuff he has always been doing? It's like his legasy.

How can those women be so offended when they know darn well that he does not even personally know them? And don't they know that this is the kind of stuff that Imus and Howard Stern throw out there?

As I said, maybe it is me. I had to listen to crap from kids when I was in middle and high school and...well, you just live with it. Either you live with it or you are a little mamas boy baby. "Boo hoo".

If some black celeb took a look at me and hurled something at me, without even knowing me, I think I'd jsut grin, and maybe say, "Ya..whatever." As long as they didn't say something bad about my mother. That is where the line always got drawn when I grew up.

Well, I have to go home now and have as beer and turn on FOX and I can't wait to watch hours more of this. I was up till 4 am last night watching this stuff, and reruns of it. (I was still able to get up at 7:30 without and alarm clock and go to work all day.)

And I type fast.

For all I know, the girls have never even heard of him before they heard that they were being called "nappy-headed hos". I don't care if it was in humor or not; it was an insult lobbed towards a very specific group of individuals. And, quite frankly, I don't care what Don Imus thought he could get away with; he's been in trouble for this precise thing, several times over. Apparently he has not learned his lesson.

How can those women be so offended when they know darn well that he does not even personally know them?

Doesn't that make the personal insult, directed towards them, even worse? I'm not sure what your point is.

If I talk about an all-black male team and call them a bunch of goddamn jungle-apes that want to go out and have sex with all of our white women, why shouldn't I expect them to be angry over it?

As I said, maybe it is me. I had to listen to crap from kids when I was in middle and high school and...well, you just live with it. Either you live with it or you are a little mamas boy baby. "Boo hoo".

That's nice. And it's just your opinion.

Real life isn't high school. Adults are not middle schoolers.

If some black celeb took a look at me and hurled something at me, without even knowing me, I think I'd jsut grin, and maybe say, "Ya..whatever."

How many whites were hanged because of their skin color? Or burned to death? Or beaten? Or had crosses burned in front of their houses? Or blown up while huddled in churches? Or shot? Or stabbed? Or brought over in the worst of conditions by slavers, a process which killed a vast amount of them, and then brought forward to work in downright dirty conditions, where they had no freedom whatsoever?

How many still have to deal with prejudice, discrimination, and hate even into today? We've made progress, don't get me wrong, but we haven't gone all the way.

Of course it's more "acceptable" to make fun of those in power than those that are not; it is not more "acceptable" to make fun of those that have to undergo even more discrimination and hate than those that do not.

As long as they didn't say something bad about my mother. That is where the line always got drawn when I grew up.

Then grow up, and stop being a momma's boy.

I mean, it was obvious that she was a slutty ho.

Oh, and if you took offense at the above, then that's irrefutable proof that she was a slutty ho. Why? Because GroundStrength says so, therefore it is so.

Well, I have to go home now and have as beer and turn on FOX and I can't wait to watch hours more of this. I was up till 4 am last night watching this stuff, and reruns of it. (I was still able to get up at 7:30 without and alarm clock and go to work all day.)

Then get some sleep. I'm pretty sure that your job is more important than this forum.

Dude, you really need to get a life.

Dang! Dr. Seuss!

http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/1aa/1aa291.htm

It seems to me like that he actually wasn't really that racist, though. But he used racist caricatures. Hmm...

Still, he was big on teaching tolerance, really.

More pics: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/Frame.htm

Haha, some of his politics is actually kinda funny. From one of his pics (January 1943, furthest to the right, in the last link): Old man talking to a kid. "There we were... Japs to the left of us! Germans to the Right! Closing in... in...! Did I run? I did not! Unyielding, I sat in this chair and groused about the annoying shortage of fuel oil!"

Then better start blaming Imus for his own demise, since he deliberately appealed to passions by making his racist & sexist comments.
Not exactly, no. He did what he always does. He was attacking. Think Don Rickles. It's an old form of humor that goes back hundreds of years and is the basis of Roasts.

You would have been completely OK with Imus being "censored" by being fired if his ratings had tanked...
Yes.

but you are not OK with him being "censored" for other standards.
That is NOT what I'm saying. Sheesh. Why is this so hard to get accross.

The standards are the same. I think people should make rational and level headed decisions. I don't think a few people should use intimidation or the threat of a boycott to influence what I can and can't watch.

That to me is a terrible position, and a very contradictory one.
Yes, strawmen often are. Stick with what I'm saying and don't put words in my mouth and you won't have a problem.

Sharpton and "his ilk" (or as Imus called them 'you people') are a minority who are rightly incensed over a racist remark
By "ilk" I was talking about demogauges and liars who play on emotions for political and financial purposes.

- If every single one of Imus's listeners wanted to override the effects of Sharpton's boycott they could ban together and demand that he be given his job back.
?

Sorry Mephisto, I'm not sure I can even take you seriously.

Like it or not, we live in a consumer society where "money talks and BS walks." Who would lead a counter-protest to Sharpton and Jackson and would anyone feel comfortable associating themselves with them?
The BS in the Duram case almost put three innocent men in jail for life.

Who would lead a counter protest against the potbangers in the early days of the mob frenzy? No one.

That's the problem. Idiots like Sharpton know how to ride the wave. Let's not forget that Jessie Jackson tride to ride the wave of the Duke case early on.

Same damn thing.

Your argument just does not wash with reality.
