My favorite model for the word "hubris" is how it was explained to me in Theater History class, because your average Greek tragic protagonist has hubris to spare. The teacher produced a glass of water filled to the very rim. Then he took a handful of dimes and slowly slipped them one by one under the surface tension. Dime after dime, they went to the bottom, and yet the cup didn't spill. You could clearly see the water mounding up above the rim of the glass, being held back by the surface tension.

Finally, one final dime overwhelmed the surface tension, and the water spilled out over the side. The teacher then explained that the water above the rim was what the ancient Greeks called "hubris." And "catharis" was the final spilling of the water.

Try it at home! Those of you without access to American dimes, use the thinnest, lightest coin in your country. You will be surprised at how many coins you can get into the glass. You will be able to win bar bets with this little trick.

But don't get all full of yourselves.

While I was munching on my breakfast, dreaming of my favorite breaky of a NYC bagel with cream cheese and lox, I was struck by an oft-repeated question (and answer), which some of you may have been asked by some of your Jewish friends. So I decided to break my self-imposed posting ban for today and share it with you, lest it slip my mind! :)

The question is: Does Israel have a right to exist?

The answer struck me while looking up at God's beautiful sun! And the answer is: Does the sun have a right to exist? What about the moon and those gorgeous stars? Do they have a right to exist? Hmmm..........

You know what? If this answer isn't good enough for some pugnacious people here, let's ask the Neturei Karta Jews about Israel's right to exist! After all, Israel was created for them, right?! Certainly not for the Palestinians who lived there for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years.

And if they say 'YES' to that question, lets ask them a follow-up question: Who gave Israel that right and did the 'Who' have the proper authority to dispense that right. If they say 'NO' to the question, let them explain to us 'WHY'! (and what should be done about it).

We need to put this question to bed, once-and-for-all! :)

PS If God created Israel (by proxy, perhaps) does God also have the (sole) right to un-create it? Let's leave it there, for the moment ;)

PS The ban is back!

Go to your phone book, specifically the yellow pages. Look under P. Near the end of the Ps you will see the word "psychiatrists". Under that will be some names and phone numbers. Pick one of the phone numbers and call it, when they answer, ask for an emergency appointment. If they can see you by Tuesday, make the appointment and BE ON TIME!
