Belatedly, or maybe a year too soon, this thread is intended to chronicle ongoing activities of Bob Perry, financier of the vile Swiftboat Veterans "for Truth" operation and longtime cohort of Karl Rove.

Perry is the primary financier of an organization called the Free Enterprise Fund. link This outfit produced the "bada-bing" ad inferring that Bob Menendez has mob connections. youtube

FEF also produced an ad for the Montana senate race about "Brokebank Democrats" who "just can't fight their nature". youtube (More than a bit ironic given the Foley and Haggard scandals.)

Stay tuned.

The Link You Offered said:
Italian-American leaders have said the 30-second television spot, run on cable in Central and North Jersey and posted on the Internet, is offensive and plays to the stereotype of Italian-Americans as mobsters
And The Sopranos doesn't? Goodfellas didn't? Donny Brasco didn't? Analyze This didnt?

Perry may be a jerk, but that complaint is a bit misplaced.

Makes me wonder: why did Karen Huges leave the Bush White House team? Was she unable to stand the smell any longer?

Op-Eds for Sale

Over the last couple of years there have been a handful of incidents where op-ed writers have been exposed as paid shills, usually resulting in apologies and/or firings.

Not everyone considers this sort of shilling a problem. Consider the bleakly refreshing attitude of Peter Ferrara, Senior Fellow at the Free Enterprise Fund and their "Director of the Social Security Project":
[FONT=arial, helvetica, univers]Peter Ferrara, a senior policy adviser at the conservative Institute for Policy Innovation, says he, too, took money from Abramoff to write op-ed pieces boosting the lobbyist's clients. "I do that all the time," Ferrara says. "I've done that in the past, and I'll do it in the future."

Why do you hate "free enterprise"?

Charlie (bend over, here comes some "free enterprise") Monoxide

In this ad and in other ads produced by FEF, viewers were provided the home telephone numbers of the dem candidates and urged to call. All this accomplished was to harass the candidates and their families.

I'd enjoy seeing the internet plastered with these sleazoids' personal contact information.

Bob Perry, who has purportedly supplanted Soros as the largest political donor in the country, may have donated more money than reported, seeing as Texas doesn't require disclosure of dollar amounts based on a ruling from the state ethics commission.
State officials don't have to report the value of monetary gifts they receive from political donors, the Texas Ethics Commission ruled Monday.
...
The commission voted 5-3 on Monday to approve a staff advisory opinion that said describing such a gift simply as a "check" is enough. No amount is necessary. link

The loud ka-ching you just heard is the sound of Bob Perry ponying up to Mitt Romney. Perry signed on as a member of Romney's "Texas Leadership Team". article

Sounds like the guy sweating is named Rudy. McCain is already talking his way out of a nomination.

No, they portray mobsters as being Italian-American. Which is different.

In the same way, films portray Nazis as having Germanic-sounding names, and no-one complains about that. Nonetheless, to make an attack ad on an American politician with a Germanic-sounding name ("Rumsfeld", let's say) including shots of the Nazi flag and the words "Sieg Heil", based on nothing but the ethnicity of his monicker, would reverse the statistical implication in a manner which is statistically invalid, not to mention tasteless.

How are George Soros and Bob Perry different? I see them as very similar: Rich guys putting money behind their faction.

I'm unaware of Soros funding the type of dishonest, extra-sleazy stuff that Perry has funded, namely the swifties in 2004 and FEF in 2006.

There's an effort underway in California to place an initiative on the ballot that would change the way that electoral votes are allocated, changing from winner-take-all to proportionate. This would be a huge boon for the GOP.

The effort is being spearheaded by The Economic Freedom Fund (EFF), a 527 group that got in trouble during the 2006 elections for sleazy push-polling targeting Democratic candidates in Indiana and elsewhere. EFF has received virtually all of its funding from good old Bob Perry.
