The former Gov of Arizona, who is now a maker of decadent pastries for the masses, claims the "Lights Over Phoenix" made him a UFO / alien / ET believer.

As Phil Plait said on his Bad Astronomy blog, I had the identical reaction when I saw the video of this.

Not that the Fifester is frothing about alien invaders. Plenty of stupid people inhabit our planet - tens of millions - who make the same claims.

It was CNN. It underscores why I watch absolutely NO television, and even if I did - the last thing I'd watch is the mainstream news programs. CNN presented the entire thing as if it was credible!!! No kidding. Never mentioned that the "mysterious lights" were nothing but boring flares dropped by military aircraft for some kind of training exercise.

I hate CNN. And MSNBC. And Fox "News". And ABC, CBS, NBC. The whole lot. They have a single motivation: Ratings. And nothing else.

Wikipedia "Phoenix Lights" and you'll read all about it.

Of course, there are pages of blather about it, and the actual explanation is in a tiny "Skeptic" section at the bottom.

Nevermind that they actually showed the exact same phenomena during the day -- a bunch of flares on parachutes by the military, even as they dropped behind the mountains and disappeared exactly like the night time ones did.

The Toronto Star today finishes their story thusly:

The Phoenix lights, which appeared in a V shape as they moved across the sky, were explained as flares dumped by a military training flight, though many still doubted the government was telling all it knew.

Astronomer and retired air force pilot James McGaha said he probed two sightings over Phoenix that night and traced both to A-10 aircraft flying in formation at high altitude.
