Why do you assume you'd remember slowing down at an intersection if there was nobody there? I certainly wouldn't. Neither would you remember if you'd imagined being hit by a car and it never occurred. You said it yourself, you were "on autopilot". You had reduced conscious perception of what you were doing. If it hadn't have been for the car jumping the lights you probably wouldn't have remembered anything about the journey.

Did your "premonition" specify the make of car? The colour? Any other features you could check? If not, there's nothing to go on.

As I say, I'm not rejecting this because of the implications, I'm rejecting it because of lack of reason to conclude it's the result of anything other than coincidence.

No details. It was not like watching a movie, but an impression of me suddenly turning to the right and seeing a car coming head on (or side on as the case may be.)

I'm rejecting it because of lack of reason to conclude it's the result of anything other than coincidence.
I didn't realize that I came to any conclusion.

Well, that's one theory shot...

Had you or anyone you knew been in a car accident?

Was the radio on? Had the news covered a road accident that day?

You said you were familiar with that intersection? Had you ever seen an accident/accident scene there?

What films had you seen in the days previously?

This could go on for a while, as you can tell. It could take ages to come up with the stimuli that made you cautious at that moment, assuming you could remember what it was. It may have been so fleetig that it never registered. As someone smarter than myself once said (more or less): instinct is just distilled experience.

I gave an opinion (as requested), not a word/phrase equivocation.

Having zero accidents is certainly one metric (of many) that is part of any "safe-driving" formula. Check with your insurance company on that.

Maybe it was the same phenomenon that occurred the day RandomElement just got up out of the blue and discovered a vase in a box hidden in a deadspace in a cupboard.

What other mystifying events of this nature have you experienced, eh RandomElement?
 
Our amazing brain is constantly processing a lot of sights and sounds without it necessarily being at the forefront of our mind. I expect the driver may have heard something, or perhaps seen in the distance a person turn their head or a reflection or shadow - something in the brain said "that's not quite right!" and sent up a red flag.
"The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker goes into this and explains when it's good to pay attention to these feelings and "premonitions". Great book.

The radio was probably on; however, I didn't remember hearing anything to trigger such a reaction.

As someone smarter than myself once said (more or less): instinct is just distilled experience.
Even so, some sort of external cueing is needed to rely on experience.

I don't need to check with my insurance company to comprehend the English language. "Safe" does not mean "zero accidents", so you are wrong.

I didn't say a car accident. I said an accident.

You may be one of those unbreakable people out there. How much do you bench press? Do you feel uneasy around water? Can you sense when others are about to do harm or come to harm?
