Hi newbie here!

My mother is driving me up a wall trying to convince me christianity is the 'true' way. She keeps telling me the bible accurately predicted current world events, such as major wars and politics. When I press her for details she tells me to study the Bible for myself and I will understand.

Exactly what is she referring to? What predictions? Any websites you can direct me to which look at these sort of claims critically?

Thanks

Ave. A common response here is that if you make a claim, you have to provide the evidence to support it. So your mother is the one to show you where the predictions she is saying exist do exist.

Depending on your age, it is often easier to just go along with what your parents want you to believe till you become independent. Otherwise they will just go nuts worrying about your immortal soul burning in hell for all time.

If you want to read a sceptical view of the bible, http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/ is a good place to start.

She is probably thinking of Revelation, the last book in the Bible, but in my opinion she is wrong. The coded predictions in that book referred to the Roman Empire around the end of the First Century AD IMO.

The one biblical prediction that seems to get so many Christians all atwitter is the re-establishment of Israel. That is a significant fulfillment of a prophecy, but what makes it a bit less remarkable is that it became sort of a self-fullfilling prophecy. The establishment of Israel was supported by many Christians not only because of the horrors of the Holocaust, but also because they wanted the prophecy to come true, seeing as how it was viewed by many as an essential ingredient of the return of the Messiah. In fact, many end-of-the-world scenarios have tried to use the establishment of Israel as an anchor date for justfying their apocalyptic predictions.
Hal Lindsey had predicted in his book "The Late, Great Planet Earth" that the Rapture was coming in 1988 - one generation or 40 years after the creation of the state of Israel. This failed prophecy did not appear to damage his reputation. He continues to write books of prophecy which sell very well indeed.

But I would suggest asking your Mom why the Bible can't predict anything specific in advance? Why not the terrorist attacks of 9-11? Why not the great tsunamis of two years ago? Why Hurricane Katrina that almost destroyed New Orleans? If she claims they did predict them, as many will claim, ask why nobody warned people or even wrote it down. It would be so much more impressive that way.

AVE, it's easy to point to an event after the fact and say, "this was predicted by the Bible, Nostrodamus, Sylvia Browne, a fortune cookie I ate last week". If there really is any truth to the Bible predicting events, why not name an event before it happens?

Of course, then we have the problem of self-fulfilling prophecyWP affecting the outcome.

Perhaps your mother is refering to the Bible CodeWP?

Repeats the same claim over and over and over.......

I think she's only repeating what she read in christian publications. I doubt she knows the specifics. I thought I might look into these claims since she brings it up everytime. o_O;

I stopped going to church a few years ago, and although my father is accepting of my decision my mother hasn't yet given up...

I agree with a_unique_person. Start with the Skeptic's Annotated Bible. There is a goldmine of ammunition to be found there.

Welcome to the forum, Ave. Stay strong.

Well, there's no real point in arguing with your mother. It's an argument no one ever wins.

However, you could tell her that you are taking her up on her suggestion you study the Bible, and just not mention that it's the skeptics, annotated, version.

Tricky, look here in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad for why prophets don't give specifics. :lol2:
