Mildly surprised that no one has started a thread about a couple of future events that got some play at TAM5.

One is that TAM6 is planned now for June 2008 instead of January; an extra 5 months to wait for many but perhaps a chance for those with school-age children to attend and more in the vacation season for many. OTOH, it will be slightly warmer in Vegas (think 90F +)...OTOOH, think skepchicks in bikinis...:D

I was more interested in the Cruises..the 2007 cruise is already filling up nicely, I put my deposit down on a room (but may be looking for a roomie if Cruise Roomie Cleon doesn't come or brings a guest) for the Alaska cruise this fall. If you've been considering it, suggest you act soon, there was a cut-rate price at TAM and the cost will only go up in the future. This'll complete my 50-states visited and maybe I'll see the Northern Lights to go with the Southern Cross. The BA is already committed to cruising with us, IIRC.

More tantalizing is the plan for a trip to the Galapagos Islands in 2008. The thought by me (and most of the folks who heard it) was (1) I'd LOVE to do that followed immediately by (2) I don't know how I could AFFORD it. Well, got some time to plan, hopefully the Waggs will get some info out later this year and let us know how much the second mortgage needs to be.

Just for thinking and information.

Do we know a date for the Galapagos? I talked with Carl about it and he said 2008, but I'm not sure if a month/season was mentioned.

I'm gunning for that one...

The Galapagos cruise is still in the very early planning stages. I have already told Jeff and Randi I'm going on that one! Now to convince Mrs. BA and the Little Astronomer to go...

I expect Randi will do little but rest for a few days, and the JREF admin no doubt need a break. But I also expect they'll need to move soon on getting things organized for next year, too. I wonder what the theme will be, if there is one?

But we do need to get Robert Lancaster up on stage. He did fine last year at the paper presentation, and he's a hero now. :)

And the next cruise is leaving from Van! I *probably* won't go,as I'm not much of a cruise person, and I'm probably going to be taking some time off to do stuff with our whales guys around that time period, but... yeah. I'll definitely try and hook up some pre- and/or post-cruise things.

The Galapagos... wow, that would be a dream.

My advisor just went on an MIT alumni trip to the Galapagos as the resident expert volcanologist. He and his wife went for free in exchange for his giving lectures about the volcanoes. Jeff, is "resident expert volcanologist" in the budget? I'm just suggesting...

Seriously, though, what a perfect JREF cruise!

Galapagos... one of my life goals. Seriously. I'll just go, end of story. Absolutely nothing will be in the way of a) Galapagos and b) excellent company. See you there.

/gloat

I am sitting in Chicago O'Hare with Mark en route to Miami, en route to Lima, where we're doing an Amazon river canoe trip thingy then en route to Macchu Picchu, then en route to Quito Ecuador, then en route to 9 days on a small cruise of 12 people in the Galapagos. I'll scope everything out for y'all and report back...

/end gloat

Oh - then I get to go back to Kabul.

/really. End gloat.

-AH.

(And, barfring unforseen, I'd probably go on a 2008 Galapagos JRef cruise.)

Yep, I'm with Luciana. Just the chance of a lifetime to do something I was going to do anyway.

The patient hubby and I are both going. No doubt.

The Galapagos would be a dream trip...and with people that would truly appreciate it. We would definitely try to attend.

glenn:)

Much as I am no fan of cruises (Too dang many people), it's really all about the company you get to hang with. Which is why the Bermuda Triangle cruise was such fun. I'm ready to sign up for Galapagos ASAP! (My goal is to die pennyless- a Galapagos cruise would help with that.)

The moment we heard about the Galapagos trip, Carol and I turned to each other and simultaneously said "we are so going on that." Karl was saying that it was only a 48 cabin ship, so there might be a bit of a competition for spots once it's officially announced.

Karl also put the potential price tag at ~$4700-$5000 per head. Oh my my.

Better start bringing my lunch to work and saving every penny. And repeating over and over, to myself "rockhopper penguins, rockhopper penguins, rockhopper penguins..."

And I imagine that's just for the cruise itself. Don't forget airfare to/from Ecuador, lodging before and after, and several $700 calls to Sylvia Browne to verify that you should in fact go.
