Kent Hovind gets 10 years

It's pretty sad listening to the tape considering what his family is going through with all of this. It seems clear, He's pretty damn stubborn.

Sad for some family members. You can hear his son, Eric Hovind, conspiring to hide assets and deceive the government. Eric, like his dad, goes around preaching creationism for a fee. I'm willing to bet his son gets paid in cash like Kent.

If you go to http://shopping.drdino.com/view_item.php?id=419&cat=Promotional (their website) you can buy 1000 Flyers/20 Posters to pass out to promote Eric Hovind's creation presentations. Only $ 125.00! What a steal!

In the tape he claims that it's illegal to prosecute anyone under federal law if the commit a law within the confines of a specific state. This doesn't make any sense. He claims that since he committed the crime in Florida that he must be prosecuted in Florida by a local and not federal court.

Is he indeed being tried in federal court?

If so, What crimes are to be tried in federal court? Obviously his is one of the types?

The IRS is a federal agency. Hovind's insame ramblings don't make sense. He trying to justify his stance with all sorts of reasons that aren't applicable and flat out have nothing to do with him.

See the indictment:

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/United_States_of_America_v_Kent_Hovind_and_Jo_Hovind

The first 12 counts deal with the Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax.

See more:

The next 45 counts deal with the Bank Secrecy Act (Hovind structured deposits of less than $10,000 to get around the reporting requirements) This deals with federally insured banks.

See more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Secrecy_Act

and the last count is obstructing a federal agent's work.

The moron is terminally confused. Perhaps there is a defect in his wiring whereby he cannot grasp any concept that would work against him.

The federal government can only govern trade if the object of trade crosses state lines. That has nothing to do with his situation as he was prosecuted for tax violations, not interstate trade. This quirk in the law was one reason the FBI could not become involved in a kidnapping unless the victim was taken to a different state but I think that situation has now been remedied.

I've always wondered about this "Christians don't need to pay taxes" bit. Jesus certainly paid his taxes, even with some humor. There is no mention anywhere in the Bible that people should not pay taxes to the State, as far as I can recall.

ETA: Kent Hovind - ten years is a salutary lesson that everyone should be treated equally under the law. Perhaps we should send him some science books to read in prison?

See also Matthew 22:21.

To paraphrase a quote from another board: in ten year's time we will see intelligent life emerge from a single cell.

Wow. Even now, he reaches out for money from the gullible. Can't say I'm surprised.

To imply that he is some sort of scam artist or only in this for money is a complete lie. Everything that he sells is not copy writed on purpose so it can legally be copied for free and distributed to others. As far as I know even his seminars are free and entrance into his museum and theme park are only suggested donations meaning you can pay what ever you want or even nothing!

Pity God didn't tell him to pay up on his taxes.

Actually he did if you check out Matthew Capter 22 I believe you will see !

So much for the acquittal that he was praying for. Apparently god was too busy to grant it.

You do realize that our God is not some sort of genie don't you? to suggest that he wasn't acquitted therefore there is not God is just plain dillusional.

This actually is kind of funny! I really doubt that he serves the full 10 years though. I don't know if he will be up for parole or anything but I know that some murderers and rapist don't serve 10 years so I would guess in about 5 years he is out spreading God's word and has some great stories of conversions in prison and will only come out with a stronger case against evolution with all of his free time to study and Pray.

I will continue to pray for him and all of you in here!

edit. I will try and work on the whole quote thing!

I'm sure he will. ;)

He can hardly come out with a weaker one. If he does some proper study, and keeps an open mind, he might even come to some surprising conclusions.

I get the feeling that many of you in here feel that his arguments are wrong or complete lies, can you please be specific? being new to the board I am not aware of all your arguments. Thanks

Whee. He's generous enough to let other people pay his back taxes. What a stand-up guy.

He probably has no money because all he does can be had for free so yes he is very dependent on those that he helps! he could count me in!

I would reccomend you go visit the talk.origins archive, they have most of Hovind's arguments laid out and the errors dissected. In particular they have his $250,000 prize for "any" empirical evidence of evolution shown to be a sham.

If you want an easy one to pick on: take hydrological sorting. Hovind says the Grand Canyon has layers because of hydrological sorting by receding floodwaters during the time on Noah. What Hovind cleverly doesn't address is why are there less dense layers above and below more dense layers in the Grand Canyon? Even if receding floodwaters could sort (and to our knowledge they cannot) hydrological sorting does not put layers of the same material both above and below layers of a substantially higher/lower density. For example we should not see limestone on both sides of sandstone. Yet in the Grand Canyon, we do.
