That's fascinating. Iran is such a complicated place, both dangerous and open, repressive and expressive, democratic and autocratic. There really is no place like it on Earth.
Agreed. From a purely sociological/anthropological perspective, it really is fascinating.
I mean, they don't censor the Economist articles talking about how dangerous Ahmadinejad is, but they ink over pictures of women in swimsuits in advertisements and a few editorial cartoons.
There's so much about Iran we really just don't--and possibly can't--understand.
They mention also the "colonial" censorship of National Geographic, where they'd never show the breasts of a 19 year old California girl, but would have no problem showing same of an African girl.
Not quite true anymore, I believe they showed a scandinavian woman topless in a hot tub a few years ago. At least that is what I heard once when that issue was discussed
