Serial Killer in Ipswich, England

I'm sure that quote could have been better written, but one would guess that he shows little sign of a regional accent or dialect. After all, an example of a Norfolk dialect is a little away from the usual English:

He yer fa got a dickey, bor?

Has your father got a donkey, boy?

.

Yeah, but hardly anyone still speaks the Norfolk, or indeed any other English dialect. And it's still an English dialect. Can't help but speculate at a bit of prejudice, or at least ignorance, on behalf of the journalist in question.

Only time will tell. I went to tesco today (where he worked) expecting a media circus. Thankfully there wasn't. I was able to buy copious amounts of chocolate.

The press have been getting everywhere, so it's no surprise if this man has been interviewed before. Some colleagues of my friends at BT labs have been contacted by the press who found them on friends reunited - they were in the same class at school as some of the victims.

Yes, it's not just "psychic" hot reading that's benefitted from the personal research opportunities afforded by the internet. It's lazy journos too.

getting back to the point that the OP was making about profiling and the later comparisons drawn with the psychics......

<rant>

it seems that the profilers use a strictly statistical approach to the endeavour but the psychics leech like parasites on that with added sneaky research, and guesswork. odds are every once in a while then the psychics will hit the mark. for odious creatures like diane lazarus to claim 98-100% results is an insult to anyones intelligence.

the profilers can be forgiven for any mistakes as their intentions are hounourable. the psychics however are a different kettle of fish as they, feeding off the misfortune and grief of victims, are only there to embellish their reputations and add mass to their purses. as my grampa used to say, "what a barrel of ◊◊◊◊◊"

i'm not a linguistic expert but, listening to him he perhaps sounds like something in between estuary and essex?...
BTW there is a 5 minute audio interview on the BBC. i tried to listen in earlier to the real player file but i think the site was overloaded as it kept breaking up. so i downloaded it complete with streambox (very handy) and put it on you-tube:-

interesting.............

MD is Michael Duffy, an Australian. So I would plump for ignorance.

I can't disprove any of Diane's statements, she must be good!

Clairvoyant Diane Lazarus' claims:
1) "I will catch the Suffolk Strangler." We'll see;
2) He is a lonely young man Lonely yes, and younger than Diane;
3) "If I was taken to where the bodies were found I would be able to help police unravel this mystery. Being at the murder scenes, I would get messages which would help me to visualise what the killer looks like."; Can't prove that she wouldn't
4) "I have worked on many high-profile cases."In her spare time, maybe;
5)She helped Norfolk Constabulary to investigate the unsolved murder of 14-year-old schoolgirl Joanna Young who was found dead in a wood just two days before Christmas in 1992 (obviously not successful that time);She helped, but was it useful help?
6)She helped West Midlands Police find the killers of college lecturer Mark Green, after claiming he contacted her from beyond the grave and told her their identity;as above
7)"I feel this young man in Ipswich wants to be the next Yorkshire Ripper" (he must be modest, I would prefer to be the next Jack the Ripper);He might
8) "I think he is a young lad..."again, 3 years younger than Diane
9) "a hoodie,..."He may own a hooded jacket
10)"who, obviously, has no life."Other than killing prostitutes
11) "I am getting the feeling that he is doing this as part of some kind of religious ritual."maybe
12) "He must be sitting there rubbing his hands with all the media coverage he's getting." (really, I would be worrying I would get caught)He seemed to enjoy the interview
13) "I fear there will be more killings..." How many murders occur every year?
14) "but I believe he will make a silly mistake and will be caught by DNA evidence." (obviously doesn't have confidence in her own skills)Everyone makes a mistake, his DNA will be taken I am sure.

See what divorces lead to Peter Lazarus?

The question is “would the UK kill five prostitutes to get the focus off some UK butts that may well be facing criminal prosecution?”

Our government did it on 9-11-2001 and killed 3,000.

For some reason the girls are on the Ipswich CCTV spy cameras and they cannot narrow down or find the car? How is it that these girls are on the cameras and not anyone else? This latest film they released of Anneli Alderton she is talking to someone and no one is in the train car with her. She is also as nervous as a cat in a dog kennel or she may need a heroin fix real bad.

I give it a probably of 1 in one billion that any person would be the victim of a serial killer.

As for whether the US or UK will kill to control the news, I give that a probability of 1. If you do not know what a probability of 1 means that means it is 100% certain.

please tell me this man will never get anywhere near the whitehouse......

Well another man has been arrested now,although info about him is sparse,he doesn't fit the criteria of a "young man" being 48 years old.

I left a message on Peter Lazarus's website,maybe others can do the same?

Why his website?

I lived in the area (Colchester) for four years, and most of the accents I heard were on that spectrum, with only a few mostly older people having a hint or more of the true local accent of North Essex, which is quite distinctive, closer to that of Suffolk. Being further north and not subject to an influx of people from the east end of London late C20th, the latter was spared homogenisation and you can still hear the Suffolk accent in some of the news reports where other locals are interviewed. Most people from "middle class" backgrounds will have closer to received pronunciation. By rights, being from Cleveland, I should sound like Vic Reeves, but because I have a posh mum and a dad who lost his accent at university, I could pass for such myself.

I think it's blackly amusing that many sources (e.g. this one) are focussing on the "surprise" aspect of there being prostitution and drug use in a "rural town". All but the most sheltered would at least suspect the sort of thing that goes on, even if they didn't know exactly which areas it happens in.

Chillzero - you're absolutely right to remind us that the guy hasn't been charged with anything. Thanks to irresponsible press reporting, he's already condemned, guilty or not. If he's innocent, and no-one is convicted, his life will be much more of a misery than he says it is already. They've already erased his MySpace page.

I shudder to use them as a source, but the Daily Mail are reporting that:

Mobile phone traces revealed that since the murders he had visited the sites where the bodies were discovered.

Today it also emerged that Stephens held a party which was attended by all five victims weeks before the first woman went missing.

They were among eight prostitutes he invited to a house warming in October. Detectives are now trying to trace all the men who were there.

One is believed to have been an American known to the girls as "Uncle". He has been described as a Christian who "gets his kicks" from preaching to the women. Detectives have already questioned him and he is likely to be spoken to again.

And argh, god I hate Richard Littlejohn, the hate-filled son of a rule 8. And I realise it's ironic that I'm talking about "hate" myself. But if we're talking "benefit to society vs right to exist", Richard, I think you'll find bilious rule 8s like yourself rank lower than prostitutes as far as many are concerned. At least they provide a valuable service. WTF have you ever done that's so great?

I never heard about him until now, but based on this, I agree with you:
It might not be fashionable, or even acceptable in some quarters, to say so, but in their chosen field of "work'=", death by strangulation is an occupational hazard.

That doesn't make it justifiable homicide, but in the scheme of things the deaths of these five women is no great loss.

They weren't going to discover a cure for cancer or embark on missionary work in Darfur. The only kind of missionary position they undertook was in the back seat of a car.
And his strained build-up to that insipid pun!

ty. not a bad guess from me...

i'm born and bred swansea with a heavy south wales accent. my older brother left home at 15 to join the army he served the country for 12 years and ended up living in italy marrying a local girl. he can speak italian fluent now and when he visits he talks with an amusingly strange army/italian accent. but oddly he insists others such as english/scots can still detect his welsh roots in his speech.

ditto that.......i hope i haven't come over as prematurely condemming the man. although he does by his own reported words and actions seem to be digging a big hole for himself.
