Serial Killer in Ipswich, England

The police will follow up information from anyone regardless.A "psychic" will not be given any more attention than me ringing in.

Surely such a person could be accused of wasting police time?

I wonder if the claim of being psychic is a defence with such a charge.

It would be nice.But again how much info from honest intending public comes to nothing? :confused:

But again how much info from honest intending public comes to nothing? :confused:

exactly, the police don't want to scare people away from offering information, the price they pay for that is having to listed to nutter whitter on about what their spirit guide told them.

Apart from that, I suppose somebody calling in with information, even claiming they got it through psychic means, could be the killer themselves.
I would think especially in a case such as this, where there's something clearly mentally wrong, that if somebody called in saying they got the info from the voices in their head, the police would have to look at it.

Do UK Police use psychics?

I would say that would depend on who you ask. I know of cases where Australian and US police have interviewed someone who claims to have psychic knowledge of a crime. I believe the police involved wondered whether the psychic was involved in the crime or covering up the real reason they had knowledge of the crime. Of course, the "psychic" can then spin the interview into their helping the police solve the case.

Also, I used prediction to mean a forecast about the future, based on reasoning and observation. This is consistent with the definition here. Psychics make predictions, but exclusively.

Well now is the time for the channelers to channel one of the dead women and tell us actual detailed information about the killer and the crimes--missing dead women should be revealing their location via channelers as well... Unless of course they are full of crap.

It would be interesting to know if criminal profilers were better than psychics--they use accumulated information of past killers to pin down aspects of the present one. I imagine psychics are doing the same. Now is the chance for Sylvia Browne to offer specific and concrete information that she can exploit later-- General predictions are just useless--they can be diversionary and then later they are retrofitted to look like amazing "hits".

A pretty resounding "no".

Thanks for that, did you ever follow up the case mentioned by the Metropolitan police?

I wonder how often a psychic's claims have been convincing enough to warrant the investigation of their involvement in a crime.

The suspect in the murder of Sydney model Caroline Byrne claimed to have been guided to her body by "telepathic communication" with the victim. Of course, he may already have been a "person of interest" prior to his claimed telepathy.

I was also thinking about a case mentioned in this thread where an American police officer interviewed a woman claiming psychic knowledge of a crime, partially because he wondered if she was actually involved. Sadly, it seems the psychic may have convinced the officer.

Of course, psychics would argue that the only reason they don't come forward more often is the close mindedness of the police who treat anyone with intimate knowledge of a crime as a potential suspect.

As OHP can attest (I'm a Bury lad originally OHP) the A12 and A14 are among the largest and busiest roads in the region, and connect to Felixstowe and Harwich, the largest container ports in the UK. Anyone who knows Suffolk knows the empty desolate regions, away from the roads. As the A14 is the major route linking Suffolk with the rest of the country, and a huge amount of traffic passes through to places I mentioned, one does not need to be psychic to speculate on a non local connection.

Tragic case. I miss East Anglia.

Somewhere there's an article about police psychics, which I think is by Joe Nickell, but I'm not sure. In any case, he mentions one case of a "psychic" who actually told the police where the body would be found. The odd thing was, the psychic didn't really seem to know when the police took her to the site.

The police promptly arrested her. Eventually she won a case of false arrest, the real killer was caught, and it was shown that she and the killer had a mutual friend. So that's a good reason for police to take at least some of these people seriously.

Edit: It was one Etta Louise Smith.

"A WELSH psychic who has cracked murder cases across Britain today tells Ipswich cops: "I will catch the Suffolk Strangler."

Clairvoyant Diane Lazarus - who helped find TV presenter Jill Dando's killer - says she holds the key to solving the massive police hunt after receiving spiritual messages that a lonely young man is carrying out the murders as part of a sickening 'religious' ritual."

ARTICLE

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

"A WELSH psychic who has cracked murder cases across Britain today tells Ipswich cops: "I will catch the Suffolk Strangler."

Clairvoyant Diane Lazarus' claims:
1) "I will catch the Suffolk Strangler.";
2) He is a lonely young man;
3) "If I was taken to where the bodies were found I would be able to help police unravel this mystery. Being at the murder scenes, I would get messages which would help me to visualise what the killer looks like.";
4) "I have worked on many high-profile cases.";
5)She helped Norfolk Constabulary to investigate the unsolved murder of 14-year-old schoolgirl Joanna Young who was found dead in a wood just two days before Christmas in 1992 (obviously not successful that time);
6)She helped West Midlands Police find the killers of college lecturer Mark Green, after claiming he contacted her from beyond the grave and told her their identity;
7)"I feel this young man in Ipswich wants to be the next Yorkshire Ripper" (he must be modest, I would prefer to be the next Jack the Ripper);
8) "I think he is a young lad..."
9) "a hoodie,..."
10)"who, obviously, has no life."
11) "I am getting the feeling that he is doing this as part of some kind of religious ritual."
12) "He must be sitting there rubbing his hands with all the media coverage he's getting." (really, I would be worrying I would get caught)
13) "I fear there will be more killings..."
14) "but I believe he will make a silly mistake and will be caught by DNA evidence." (obviously doesn't have confidence in her own skills)

Oddly, the police aren't paying for her train ticket to Ipswich just yet:

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said yesterday: "We've had a great deal of offers of help.
"We will judge whether Mrs Lazarus can be of use to us as the investigation develops."

Mrs Lazarus is now waiting for a call from detectives, after her husband Peter, who runs one of Wales' leading law firms, telephoned Ipswich Police to offer her services on Wednesday ...

It would be wrong to use handy contact form on Peter Lazarus & Co's website to leave a sarcastic remark. Any Llaneli legal firm with an ad for a quickie divorce website is obviously among Wales' leading law firms.

Also, it would be wrong to call Peter up at 2 in the morning to ask to speak to his wife, even if he is the 24 hour duty solicitor.

But if you do want a quickie divorce, their operators are expecting your call!

This stuff just makes me puke.

Make a claim which nobody's going to bother to refute: "I helped catch xyz murderer"

Offer a service: "I can catch the Ipswich ripper"

Offer a profile: "It's a man"

Fortuitously, it's exactly 2 am in Wales at 3 pm in NZ. I might just need some urgent Welsh legal advice tomorrow. And the next day. And possibly even at about 5 am GMT on 1/1/07.

FILTH!!!

(They just had to be named Lazarus didn't they?)

Just caught the BBC news, the police have arrested a 37 year old man at his home address in Trimley, near Felixstowe.

At the moment the police are not realeasing any further info, so time to start ticking off the predictions.

This woman absolutely infuriates me.
There are so many things wrong with that list above, but I will just remind people of this thread: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55155
She did not help the police find the body of Mark Green - his murderer confessed.
She did not solcve the murder of Muriel Drinkwater, and she did not identify Jill Dando's murderer.

These people (like Lies-r-us) totally detract from the incredible amount of work put in by the police, and steal their deserved glory when crimes are solved.

I don't think we can really tick anything off until the full facts are revealed in court (light pencil ticks only!)

Ultimately if he is the man, then it makes sense.. He took no care to hide the last two bodies, so it would have followed that he propbably would have dumped them closer to his home than the others (trimley is on the end of the old felixstowe road at levington)

Here's my prediction about the outcome: A psychic was, or will not be instrumental in identifying the killer.

What about a criminal psychologist? Perhaps, if they were directly involved with the police.

Yes, a bit presumptive of me. So just light pencil marks, and keep a rubber at hand.

(Note, UK English: Rubber = Eraser)

more on this HERE

the first thing that interested me about the arrest is that he is named and his address is released here (Tom Stephens Jubilee Close, Trimley St Martin) if this man isn't the murderer then he is in for a torrid time when he is released.

also the article states "An interview given by Mr Stephens was published in the Sunday Mirror" i dont buy that particular rag. Does anyone have more on this aspect? i've looked at the related website but can't find reference. i am intrigued as to whether the Sunday Mirror interview led the police to this man.

as for diane lazarus i live just down the road (swansea) from this specimen. i shall certainly take an interest from now on.

We asked the police: Police use of psychics in the UK
A pretty resounding "no".

not the same for the Irish Garda though:-

(letter from an Irish police officer to Diane Lazarus)

(see scan here)

Detective Inspector Eamon O'Reilly said:
To Whom It Concerns

Re: Diane Lloyd (Hughes) - Lazarus.
26 Llandeilo Road, Crosshands, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire S14 7ER

Reference as above, this is to state that we employed the services of Diane Lloyd (Hughes) - Lazarus to assist us in the investigation of the murder of a young girl in Dun Laoghaire. Which occurred in September 1999. We employed the assistance of Diane in March 2002. She was able to outline the details of the murderer, description etc and her assistance greatly enhanced our investigation

I look forward to working with her in the future.

at the link above an audio interview with the arrested man is available. perhaps this is what the reference to the sunday mirror is based on.
it seems the man knew several of the murdered women:-

In an interview with BBC News said:
Mr Stephens said he had known Miss Adams for about 18 months - "about as long as I've known any of the girls".
He added: "Tania I've only known for about six months but in the end I did actually get to know Tania better than I knew Gemma.
"I didn't know Anneli at all, I've only every spoken to her since both Tania and Gemma went missing, partly to say, if you know anything, please talk to the police and if you won't talk to the police, please talk to me and I'll talk to the police.

"And also trying to say 'are you okay' and trying, I don't know what I was trying to say. "Pretty much all the girls who I didn't know before I've tried to speak to since in that way."
my bold

you can see/hear why the police might be very interested in this man........

somehow reminicent of the Soham murders and the Huntley interviews
