CSICOP is now CSI, to eliminate confusion with Psicop, Bester on Babylon 5.

Will they have different chapters around the U.S.? Like CSI: Miami or CSI: New York?

Damn.

I always liked the play on words and assumed it was intentional...
Not on the part of the B5 writers, anyway. What was intentional was to name the Psi Cop Bester after the author of "The Demolished Man" (1953) about a telepathic cop pursuing a murderer.

But CSICOP was intended to be a play on words, right? Hinting at their busting paranormal claims, etc. That's what I've always thought (I may have even read it somewhere, years ago).

I've never watched Babylon 5 (I assume that's what "B5" is).

I give up. What does "jinx" mean in this context? Is it some sorta SC ritual thing? Do I have to slaughter a goat or something?

Nope, never heard of that. Back when I was a lad, the closest thing to that was when they yelled "Witch" and then you had 10 seconds to get out of town before they hung you or pressed you with stones.

Jinx was definitely around here when I was a kid (I was born in 1961), but I never heard the "buy me a coke" version - ours was just that you couldn't talk until someone said your name.

Could that have been a regional superstition? So far, the people who say they heard it are posting from the South, or Southwest.
I collect weird superstitions. Before I came to NY, I never heard of picking up a penny heads up is OK, but tails is bad luck.
Any others?
(No rule against derailing my own thread, I guess.)

Not that I know of - I've found jinx fairly universal across the US. I've heard it from those in California as well as New Yorkers. Same with penny heads up, all the day you'll have good luck. Playing "Jinx!" is more a child's game than a superstition.

Edit: Here are two regional superstitions from NC (not to be confused with SC, as that is another place) - Eat collard greens on New Years Day for good luck. Don't do laundry on New Years Day or a family member will die in the coming year.

you are wrong.. JMS did indeed make PsiCop as a reference to CSICOP.

ETA: Your bester reference is correct though.

And Geordi LaForge was named after a sick child who had been a fan of the original series.

Tobias,
Actually. I was not wrong, since I was only referring to the B5 writers.
