On Sunday, Paul Barnes, founding pastor of the 2,100-member Grace Chapel in the Denver suburb of Englewood, told his evangelical congregation in a videotaped message he had had sexual relations with other men and was stepping down.
Dave Palmer, associate pastor of Grace Chapel, told The Denver Post that Barnes confessed to him after the church received a call last week.
The church board of elders accepted Barnes' resignation on Thursday.
On the videotape, which The Post was allowed to view, Barnes told church members: "I have struggled with homosexuality since I was a 5-year-old boy ... I can't tell you the number of nights I have cried myself to sleep, begging God to take this away."

I feel sorry for the poor sod. He knows he is gay at five, and spends his whole life hating himself. Sooner he wakes up to the fact god isn't going to do **** about his sexuality, the sooner he might lead a life he actually enjoys.
 
i think we've reached the stage where

"evangelical pastor is not gay"

is the more shocking headline :D
 
Looking at it the other way round, perhaps it takes the inner torment of being gay and trying to hide it to actually be an evangelical pastor...

Which suggests that Fred Phelps must be SUCH a leather queen...!
 
It's kind of sad. They spend so much energy to convert the gays, but they get converted themselves and the gays aren't even trying.

That's the real cause for religious homophobia: they're jealous of the conversion rate! And the costumes and music are better, too. And the hair.
 
Kudos to the associate pastor for being able to keep a confidence. He ought to step down, as well, if he can't keep his mouth shut.

As Zep says, not always.

There is a reason why gay men feel at home in the High Church part of the Episcopal Church - all that glorious tat, the gorgeous vestments (dresses), all that ceremony, darling, it's heavenly! True dat.

It's not a big surprise. I think in many of these type American communities, it's a very macho/hetero culture, but you get a certain exemption & escape from a lot of that in the church.

Perhaps if there was a culturally approved space in his community to "put on a show" and perform for people besides the church, he would never have even gotten involved.

Not really compaible with the new testiment which kinda has him down as an only good. I'm not sure it is a good idea to look too cloesly at the old testiment in that respect.

I guess.

The only parallels could be drawn by the religious though, as I'm not aware of Paul hiding his affliction from his wife and congregation for so long in such a deceptive way. Homosexuality would not be part of the message being preached by this pastor (implicitly at least, but I suspect explicitly as well). But then again, no one seems to agree what Paul's thorn actually was, like everything in the bible it is open to whatever interpretation suits the time and place.

I think it is more open to interpretation than most things, as not everything is open to whatever interpretation, because all we know is in the text and all it has is thorn, no other details at all. I was not mentioning it because I think the thorn was homosexuality, just that Paul strongly desired it to be removed and it wasn't.
