9/11 and the Mythbusters

I've been thinking lately that we should ask the Mythbusters guys to take on some of the sillier things our 9/11 Ctists buddies have been bringing up. It seems to me there are a lot of simple things you could try, if you had the time and resurces, to show that their "common sense" ideas are without merit.

I thought maybe we could come up with a few suggestions for myths they could take on, and perhaps a suggestion of how to do it.

For instance, today we have TS1234 blathering on about what pumps can and can't do about pressurizing air. I'm pictuing a slab of concrete suspended in some sort of tube structure, so that it can be dropped, allowing it to pressurize the air below. We can then measure the pressure, to see what happens. We can also do runs with various holes cut in the tube at various points, to see how that affects the airflow and pressure.

We could even throw in some dust and debris, to see how it acts under such conditions.

Anyone else have a suggestion? If we get some good ones, we could submit the whole thread to the Mythbusters team, and see what they say.
 
I called up the hardley boys and they said that people like TS
should take a mouth full of flour and blow it into a ordinary flute
to see what happens... :boggled:
 
Ask them to try to get thermite to cut through a vertical steel girder.

Or try and weaken steel with microwaves (probably too crazy a theory)

As them to melt aluminium with impurities and show how it glows.

Possibly something to show load bearing steel girders buckling when heated?

I doubt they would (i think someone already wrote it asking for them to do so)

They could prove how thermite/thermate works.
They can also help prove how steel weakens at half its melting point, and can bend.
 
I was also thinking about the "paper not burning next to the burning cars". I'm sure they'd love to set fire to a car. We just have to come up with a reason for them to make it remote-controlled :)

This could also deal with the "half-melted" cars bit.

Yes, they might think it's too disrespectful, and I could understand that. I'm mostly thinking they would be the ones to have the skills, time and resources to manage it, if they were willing.

Do you know for sure if someone has written them?

I dont know. After persuing the net about 9/11 for the past few months, I know that it was suggested somwhere, and someone answered that they had wrote in.

You can pose a question so it doesn't relate to 9/11 ..

ie.

At what temperature does steel loose its strength?
 
I was at a meeting in San Francisco last month, and the MythBusters were there as guests at the reception.
Someone actually asked them a question about 911. It was something along the lines of "Have you guys considered doing a show about the various myths surrounding 9/11" and I think Adam's reaction was "not wanting to touch it with a 10 foot pole"
(I was on my 4th glass of champagne by that point so I wasn't exactly the most reliable eyewitness)
 
well some of these things a group of JREFers could do ont heir own, like the concrete tube one

i could probably even get a car to burn if ic ould find some property to burn it on, lol
 
911 conspiracy theories aren't that interesting, unfortunately. The technical elements of most conspiracy theories are total gibberish and would only put them in the crosshairs of alot of insane people.

To the average person, technical details of 911 conspiracy theories is boring and ludricious.

Furthermore, they don't seem to want to touch any conspiracy theories. The JFK "jet-effect" seems like an ideal mythbusthers experiment, but they don't want to do it. Frankly, I don't blame them.
 
They did do a segment a few months ago on the jet exhaust knocking cars over claim which was used in Loose Change. IIRC, they could not quite make it happen.

Penn & Teller did an episode of B.S.! about conspiracy theories. 9/11 was mentioned, and many of the key CT arguments were utterly debunked. Granted it wasn't done in the fun mechanical way that the Mythbusters could have. The same episode of B.S.! also mentioned the JFK jet effect, which explains why JFK's head jerked back and to the left when we was shot from the opposite direction. Do a search on Google video for "Penn Teller conspiracy" and it's probably bound to come up.

That being said, the Mythbusters would never touch 9/11, with a ten foot pole or otherwise. Adam and Jamie have an outstanding show and I think they do a fairly scientific job, but the bottom line is that Mythbusters is entertaining. They're not going to do a show about a recent national tragedy, simply because the issues it raises are so divisive and emotional that they would probably lose a good chunk of their viewership.

I think it's sad, because I think they'd do a hell of a job with the subject. Within their market of TV, it's not politically or economically viable to call out these conspiracy-minded idiots like they deserve to be.

This is an excellent idea. See if you can get the concrete slab to pressurize the air, and turn into powder. Make it 110 concrete slabs, not one.

The British series Brainiac managed to obtain a jet plane and did this stunt. They were successful in getting the car to tumble down the tarmac. You may be able to find the clip on You Tube.

But the jet was standing still, not flying overhead. Big difference.
