gay games: utter failure

Organizers of the games for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered athletes had promised the event would generate tourism dollars and profits — and not leave the city and taxpayers with a deficit.

Sounds like a failed business venture. Why should the city be shielded from loss from a business deal that didn't pay off? If they had made millions, would they be giving that money to "the gay community"? You risk money to make money, and you might lose money. Fact of life. If you don't want to accept the risk, don't go into business.

The Gay Games?

Isn't this idea just a little bit stupid?

Now who is going to pay for this idiocy? The general population of course.

Why doesn't the gay community pay for it?

Frankly, Pardalis this looks like a failed enterprise and I'm not too sure gays were solely responsible. Certainly someone in Montreal thought it was a good idea to back the games.

A parallel to this might be the "Special Olympics" in the U.S. If a city decides to back a special event like this, is it up to the people participating to bring in the crowds? I don't think so. Who would feel comfortable making children with Down's Syndrome or children in wheelchairs foot the bill if the Special Olympics didn't prove profitable?

What about gays or lesbians who don't care for sports? Would they be liable too? It just sounds like a bad business decision to me.

They should pay us back by not bothering us for the next 10 years. No more parades.

At least the "Special Olympics" have a reason to exist.

You're right about the bad business angle. Alot of hetero business people thought this was a good idea.

I just needed to vent a little. ;)

The Montreal event was not the "Gay Games". The Gay Games were here in Chicago last summer, and just managed to break even.

Some friends of mine won the bronze in team bowling btw.

It gives gay people a chance to compete in sports like gymnastics and ice skating, which are monolithically heterosexual in mainstream games.

Maybe you're right, maybe it is a good idea. I've heard stories about the culture of militant heterosexuality present in the 2 man luge underworld.

I think the bill is placed squarely in the butt of those that elect the officials that authorized the expenditure. Platitudes abound.

Besides, how do you tax just the gay segment? A "sir" charge?

"Placed...in the butt?" Not bad, Dude.

;)

You're kidding, right? Aren't a lot of male figure skaters gay? This is a joke, right?

Back in 2001 or 2002 - They held the same event in Sydney. Ended in total disaster - I think of 10 days of events, they got through something like 4 before the creditors decended and shut the whole thing down

How is this any different from the massive bill I'll be paying to host the Olympics in 2012? I think they should force those that regally participate in sports to pay for it. And they can stop bothering us by canceling the London Marathon for the next 10 years.

Ice skating, "monolithically heterosexual?"

Surely you jest. (Or, things have changed while I wasn't paying attention.)

In my speed reading mode, I first read that as "team blowing" and did a double take. I realized I needed to slow down as "team bowling" came into focus.
