the asians believe we are on earth to achieve the state of nirvana, or non-thought.
And like they claim, when people get rich they begin to get frustrated because nothing in the material world can fully satisfy them.
The alternative seems to be to seek that state of non desire called nirvana cause desire is the creator of all thought and our ego can only exist in desire.Thats why the rich suffer. However as far as I know there is no scientific evidence of this nirvana. Do you know anything on this topic?

What you know, round-eye? "the asians," sheesh:D .

I don't think that it's a different physical state, and unless it's so removed from everything that the phenomenon shows up brain-wise, there'd be no way of measuring, I think.

i know that some scientists claim that consciensnouss is a physical thing not a soul thing

No, Buddhists do. You seem to not understand this point. I blame Lisa. Also, nirvana is not a state of "non-thought", but a state of "ultimate inner peace".

No, desire is the cause of all suffering. Sheesh, don't they teach proper nirvana understanding in school these days?

However as far as I know there is no scientific evidence of this nirvana.

This is true. But not all Buddhists claim that nirvana is an actual place. Most (i.e. those who are not neo-buddhists), simply believe it is a state of being, or a mind set. In other words, they want to become smart enough so that they won't suffer.

Do you know anything on this topic?

Well, you clearly don't.

You're right, "some scientists" do claim that. Most, in fact, because all in "consciensnouss" seems reasonably explanable through science. But what does this have to with nirvana? Or the price of fish, for that matter.

Well, you clearly don't.

That would certainly explain why he was asking for information on the topic. While you may be one of the few people on earth who knows everything, many of the rest of us are ignorant on more than a few topics. Seeking out information on those topics should be encouraged, and not met with nasty remarks.

Ok, fair point. I apologise and withdraw remark. Especially if idunno is simply looking for information. If he is, I honestly invite him to ask anything he wishes, and I will try to, as best I can, answer him.

However, I assumed he was not, as he claimed, looking for information, but rather, trolling. Why? Because it is in my opinion that remarks which do not show any respect for a culture or cultural views, are not the way someone who is genuinely interesting in a topic and looking for information initiations a conversation.

Oh, and I do not know everything. Not even close.

nasty remarks are quite common here.
I didnt say Nirvana was a place did I?
As for non thought it seems you never experinced that state of nirvana for a minute.
When you reach that state of serenety your mind stops simply, for a while.

racist remarks?
Because I said Asians believe in Nirvana? This is what I call political correctness turned back upon itself.

I was quick to judge. I honestly apologise. I have been dealing with reading LCL's thread all day, if that helps.

No, but I assumed that's what you intended when asking about scientists. If not, could you explain further?

This is not how I understand nirvana. I learned nirvana as, quite simply, the state of no desire (and thus no suffering). It is hinted that you 'rise to a higher plane' of existance, etc, but it is generally thought that nirvana is just a state of mind.

Once again, I was quick to judge and I apologise. It was a heat of the moment comment (I am prone to doing that, I'm afraid), made as a baseless assertion. I felt I heard underpinnings of racism and picked on it. Upon re-reading your post, I feel I was mistaken. Please accept my apology. :(

And just to be specific, it was the second post you made which made me feel that way. Instead of listening to Lisa's post, you replied "well most asian religions do", which, to me at the time, felt like someone with no care for the actual culture you were asking about. Again, I apologise. I was wrong.

if consciousness is a physical thing then theres no nirvana because consciousness is supposed to be the soul. Nirvana is total counsciousness through the practice of meditation and self awareness. Non desire is only part of it. As we are, we are about 10% aware.

no problema!:D

I'm sorry, but I have nothing further to say. This is not how I learned Buddhism.

Also, a few questions. What do you mean by "consciousness is the soul" and what do you mean by "we are only 10% aware"? Aware of what?

Who thinks? Our soul or consciousness. We tend to identify with our mind so we tend to think we are the mind. But when you stop thinking you still remain conscious So consciousness is a separate thing from the mind.
Some say it is the soul.

Self awareness. Most of us act without self awareness. You move your body but youre not aware of it.Its automatic. Practice of self awareness when we do things is supposed to help reach a higher stage of consciousness, with practice what is unconscious will become conscious.
