Just seen a programme on channel 5 in the UK about this, heres a link from the bbc website www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A673391, there seems to be alot of sightings...now assuming all the people who claim to have seen things arent lying, can anyone provide a rational explanation as to what they could be?

Here's the link.
Well, there's not much to go on from the article:
Covent Garden: A tall man in a frock coat, tall hat and gloves is said to be pacing the tunnels and has been seen since the 1950s.
Since that is essentially all the article says about the subject, there's no means of debunking nor confirming it. I guess the best one can do as to coming up with an alternate non-lying explanation is to suggest that perhaps any witness(es) were mistaken.

They could be people that have claimed to see things.
Sounds quite rational to me.

how exactly do you expect ghosts to get around? by flying on brooms? :eye-poppi Of course not! Its London. Everyone takes the Underground.

I really enjoyed watching the programme, it spooked the hell out of me. That was more down to the eery atmosphere of the location shots and not the anecdotes that made up most of the material for the tales though. I didn't know Vic Tandy had died either :(

I watched it but not enough to comment on most stories. But the electric chair picture was interesting Jim.Double exposure, surely? OR as someone said a poster on a wall? The exaggeration of the sparks rules out a ghost,so does the wooden chair I assume.

Given the apparent clarity of the picture, I'd vote poster. I thought at first it was this one but Gross' investigations showed that match with the Tower of London (?) exhibit.

There was some talk in the program about ultrasound being involved if I remember correctly (I was falling a sleep at the time) has anyone heard anything about low frequency inaudible noise causing people problems? Is this at all likely as an explanation?

I assume you mean infrasound rather than ultrasound, yah?

ETA: Curses, beaten to it yet again!

Or, there is a person pretending to be a ghost/phantom (maybe a family/organization tradition) - wouldn't be the first time.

fls and brett quite probably did mean infrasound, as I say snoozed through quite a lot of it, which was a bit annoying as I wanted to see it

ETA: fls that was an interesting article, thanks.

I thought infrasound could be the problem but that wouldnt explain the sightings of the same person covered in the program i.e. a little girl and a railway worker, could it be possible that the infrasound manifests itself as similar visions? I know nothing about this so any info would be great.

It's possible. It's also possible that an isolated environment, fairly anomolous atmospheric conditions, an individual on their own and overheard tales of ghostly spirits can combine one night into a sense eerie dread and a glimpse of form and colour that's then interpreted as another manifestation of a haunting.
