Anyone been to see John Edward?

He was in Staten Island recently at a theater right around the corner from where I live and I missed it! I was SO bummed when I found out because I've always wanted to see this guy in action.
My plan, should I ever get the chance to enact it, is to go in chatting about a made up relitive that I hope to get in touch with and see what happens. My husband thinks its a waste of time though, so it's probably a good idea that I found out too late.

That's funny! That is what I've always wanted to do too. I even have a whole heart wrenching story all made up. Doubt he'd ever come up here though. Plus I don't know if I could deal with the new void in my wallet. And the waste of money would hurt more if he ended up not picking me.

But it should would be good for some laughs if he did!!

I'd have to write an anonymous letter to JREF though, wouldn't wanna get sued.
 
Would the person who contacted the anonymous audience member care to ask the anonymous audience member to expand on what that person meant by aggressive? thanks.
 
slightly off-topic (please forgive me) but does anyone know the situation surrounding his old tv show ending. I thought it did fairly well in the ratings and was presumably a cheap production, so why did it end?

Why do you ask? Are you planning on going to a show? I saw (and answered) you other medium-related question. Are you on the fence about mediums/psychics? What are your thoughts on the subject?

I can't speak for him but I'm going to assume that he perhaps meant when a medium tries to force the person to make a connection to one of their guesses.

Let's say John Edward is talking to a lady (I'll call her Marge) about her husband who has "crossed over":

JE: He's showing me a connection to the letter "B". Does this mean anything to you?

M: No

JE: Are you sure, think back, he's definitely showing me a "B", it could be a relative or friend.

M: I don't think....

JE: Perhaps a pet or nickname...

M: (thinking really hard) Ummm...we had a dog named Boomer.

JE: That's it! He's showing me that Boomer is there with him.

Now if Marge wouldn't have made the connection, then Edward would have just moved on to his next guess leaving poor Marge to assume that it was her faulty memory that's mistaken. Not Edward. Then she may go home and make the connection later.

When recounting the event to friends later, she'll say, "He even knew we had a dog named Boomer! There's no way he could have known that!"

That's why anecdotes aren't evidence.

That's why you can't argue with, um, talk to the bleevers. A friend of mine tried to tell me what a great psychic her mother-in-law is, and when I brought up confirmation bias and the like, she replied with, "No! She told me things she couldn't have known!" Which made me doubt her recollection, but without a transcript handy, the argument, I mean... discussion can't go any further. Oh well...
 
I trid to find a transcript of the Larry King show from the 10th of September, the night before the 09/11 attacks but was unable to find what I was looking for. I did find an example of what he does (or doesn't) do for his act.

I also find this, which I found amusing, yet disturbing.

I dont believe in mediums but have a friend who does and am trying to get a collection of good debunking stories and saw John Edward as a good start.
 
Well, it's ironic, but why should he believe your "stories" of mediums getting caught cheating, not being correct, etc.? He can always fall back on, "Yeah well that guy is a fake, but this one is real!" It's what is called the burden of proof - and it's on him to show how mediums are real, not you how they're fake.

My $.02... You're wasting your time. True bleevers will believe regardless. Case in point: My friend likes to tell a tale of seeing a ghost. To my mind, there are several alternate explanations . But my friend prefers "it was a ghost". Why? Who knows. Makes for a better story that way.

I think the only way you'll convince him is by going the route of asking if he is truly open-minded. That is, is it possible mediums are fake? Is he "open" to that possibility? Maybe you'll get a foot in the doorway to let discussion and critical thinking take place. But don't hold your breath.

But good luck! You can even send him here for some lively debate!
 
Oh. I forgot. JE is a good start. My friend knows him. Here's a little anecdote... A number of years ago, my friend and JE were watching something "paranormal" on TV. I don't remember exactly what - psychic, medium, whatever. And JE made a comment to my friend like "This guy stinks. I could do it better than that!" To which my friend thought to himself (he's too nice to say anything directly) "I thought what you did was 'real'."

There were about 10 of us that went together to the Van Praagh show and we planned ahead of time to do this very thing. We all made up stories about some fictitious person or fictitious event and then, as we waited in line (over an hour) we made it a point to talk about this made-up thing both between ourselves and with other people who were in line. We tried not to be overt but did nothing to hide the conversations.

None of our stories were used. But Van Praagh was so bad that we decided that he did not do any "warm" reading and he was not cheating in this regard.

One bit made me suspicious...

It goes on to describe how AMAZINGLY accurate John Edward's reading was. I'm thinking that since she was contacted about being an usher, perhaps someone did some research on her? I mean how did they know that SHE in particular wanted tickets to the show? How did they know to contact her? If they were randomly calling people to be ushers, why not call me?

Seems pretty skeevy to me.

Really? I may have it at home on a CD rom somewhere. If you want, I can dig it out for you.

From memory, predictions about epoch-making attacks on New York are pretty thin on the ground.
