And yet some people saying a dark brown savoury vegetable spread is disgusting...
 
Marm/vegim ite is best if you mix it with softened butter first and then spread the paste onto dry toast.

You heard it here first.

I get a 10-yearly craving for the yeasty stuff and that's my method. Actually, I'm about due another round. It's a pain to buy a whole jar for just one slice though, maybe I'll send the leftover goo to some Americans.
 
America has banned Vegemite??? WTF? How can you live without Vegemite?

First thing tomorrow I'm going to my local McDonalds to protest, then I'm writing a letter to the Prime Minister to demand the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and lastly and most importantly I am going to boycott all versions of Don MacLean's American Pie!!!

Odd. You can buy bottles of folic acid right off the vitamins shelf at the grocery store. Supposed to be good for you.

It's to keep consumption of this nutrient -- which is naturally occurring in many foods, below the upper limit of 1.4mg daily. Given the average diet, limiting fortification to grains and cereals seemed a common sense way of doing that. If it were in, say, the bread, jelly, and peanut butter of a kid's sandwich, as well as in other foods s/he eats during the day, could present a problem.

The look Shemp has in your avatar...that's how I looked after I first smelled the vile concoction. Couldn't get past the smell to actually taste it.

My Lithuanian grandmother made them, in their own natural Jelly. Kauschelini (sp?) Like head cheese, but with bones to gnaw on. Only coked down so far that she could gum the meat off the bones.

Vegemite sounds reminiscent of Vietnamese Fish Sauce, Noc Mum? I use it to add savoriness to sauces and gravies. It's a fermented protein product, deadly in full strength, but oh so good as in 'spice' quantities. Check the ingredients lists of prepared foods next time you get to the grocery. "Modified food starch", "hydrolized yeast protein", "monosidium glutamate", all similar. Or cook down the soup bones into "stock". It's used in Worchestershire Sauce- label says "anchovies".

The Japanese studied it, gave it the name Umami. Seems we have taste buds for the amino acids. Best natural source is mother's milk.

I tried Vegemite several years ago when a friend brought a jar back from England. The smell was just like what it smells like when they pave roads on a hot summer day. The taste was worse.
 
Oh man, now everything tastes like Kauschelini. My coffee, my ham sandwich... I suppose you Vegemite fans are going through that too?

Well strong flavors that are vile in full strength but good in lower quantities are common in food. But remember rotten fish make good sauce, the romans knew this and so do the vietnamese.
 
Never tried Vegemite. But I have tried marmite.

Never again.

Never again should our allies be left to eat such garbage. We should invade and conquer those that eat yeast extracts to protect them from poor food. And then we will build extra McDonald's and export more spam to cover the resulting food shortage! Sure both McD's and spam suck, but they cannot be as bad as marmite.

I would be worried about a marmite insurgency after the invasion.
 
We shall destroy their WMD* before they can use them against other nations!
