A couple of issues I have with this presentation.

  1. The supporting analysis on the air travel statistics is just wrong. It states that it has "only just recovered", but even an eyeball proves it ad recovered by 2003, three years ago.
  2. The reported hate crime stats might be right, but the presentation of these as annual figures that coincide with Bushes' inauguration in January 2005, makes it look like Bush was the cause of an increase in hate crime, when clearly the causal event was September 11. The chart should really be adjusted to show that.

You know what is one of the most interesting thing in this (for stats geeks perhaps). But I reckon I detect a change in the seasonal pattern of air travel pre and post 9/11.

Before 9/11 there was an annual dip in trvel (following hte peak in August), but it was not the weakest month in the year.

However, since 9/11 September is the weakest month for air travel (about equal with February it looks like).

1) I can't see where it says it has "only just recovered" te bit I saw says
Services resumed within a few days but it took years for the market to recover.

2) this chart shows petty clearly that these are annual figures, there is a white space between each years figures, and no trend line has been drawn. I'm not sure how, given the data available, they could make it clearer that the hate crimes where linked to 9/11 and not to the inauguration of Bush. They have a similar (although less politically charged) problem with the Osama Media Index, which shows a similar leap for the whole of 2001, when the most likely interoperation of the data is that from Jan-Aug 2001 OBLs media presences was similar to the level in 2000, only leaping after 9/11.
 
The stats on Dubya's approval rate is interesting.

Why would he orchestrate the 9-11 attacks, if his approval rate was the highest ever?

CTers couldn't take a credibility dive without deep mining equipment.
 
Interesting data, and if anything it shows how 9/11 and the subsequent reactions boosted defense spending, hate crimes and Bush's approval ratings. Also interesting is that nearly every red-herring we've been fed since 9/11 has been an attempt to re-capture the fears and apprehensions immediately following 9/11 when the entire country was willing to do whatever necessary to bring OBL to justice. Bush had his chance to direct a united populace in the hunt for Bin Laden, but instead we were told to keep shopping and go on vacation or the terrorists win.

It's to tell the traveling public: Get on board. Do your business around the country. Fly and enjoy America's great destination spots. Get down to Disney World in Florida.
