StopSylviaBrowne.com

Something that just occurred to me. I don't know what form the intro page will end up taking, but in the meantime isn't there a third possibility besides:

Is she a well-intentioned spiritual leader, with actual psychic powers?

Or is she a fraud, making money by callously manipulating and using the bereaved?

It could be that she's well-intentioned but deluded. Just saying.

(Also: her fingernails scare me. I don't know who mentioned Count Orlock, but... it's appropriate, seeing as she's a bit of a vampire herself.)

Re: site search
I think that this is definitely in the site's future as I see it, but will not be a part of the initial version of the site.

Depending on how you set up the site, you might end up limiting your options. So if you are realtively certain that there will be a search, you should consider that during the initial setup. (Unless, of course, you won't mind doing things all over again at a later stage...)

It's not much of an issue, though. A simple search will always be able to just scan the site, or analyze directory-struture.

Here's a question to demonstrate my internet ignorance: Do the amount of hits a site receives affect it's position on a search?

I ask because I have made it a habit to visit http://www.stopsylviabrowne.com/ every time I log on, and every once and a while when I am on the computer. Does this help?

No.

A search engine has no way of knowing what sites you visit.

A search engine *can* evaluate what links you follow from their own pages - if they chose to run you through a script on their site and then redirect you to the site that you wanted to goto.

OK, I added a link in the UK Skeptics forum, and John Jackson says he's going to plug the site in his commentary soon.

I've also added it to the JREF forum links section - Rob, let me know if you want any changes to the description!

From her official site:

The only complete truth you will read regarding quotes and statements purportedly made by Sylvia Browne is within this website and those of Hay House, Penguin-Putnam, and Angelbea Publishing. There have been a disturbing number of misquotes on various other websites citing various statements Sylvia has made either on the radio, on the Montel Show, or in news publications that are simply not true. To clarify any information you have heard or read about Sylvia Browne from any other source that does not appear on this site, please email us directly at office@sylvia.org for a truthful response.

Pay no attention to the Truth behind the curtain!

Grayman, your signature just gave me the creepy crawlies. "XXX" - Sylvia in porn is an image I just didn't need in my head.

Thanks a lot! :D

Imagine those long nails...slowly raking across your back, as she arches herself with your passionate embrace...

:boggled:
Sorry everyone.

What's with Sylvia's finger nails? That pic is ripe for photoshopping.
I'm not a lawyer, but you might want to check with one (Loss Leader, you there?) about using it. She may own the rights to it.

MARGOLIS: First I need to know if there's someone with an "M" or a "J" initial around you.

CALLER: No.

MARGOLIS: Anyone deceased?

CALLER: Yes.

MARGOLIS: Is that a female?

CALLER: Yes.

MARGOLIS: Is it spelled M-A...

CALLER: ... yes.

MARGOLIS: R, like Mary or Margaret.
Emphases mine. Whenever I see/hear an exchange like this, my reaction is always the same: "Wow, for someone who's supposed to be a psychic, you sure do ask a lot of questions!"

... The more I read about her...

"Shape of gasoline!" "Form of a match!"

Take her down.

From memory.

Douglas was an artist who lived millions of years ago and he wrote the most fabulous poems on the most exquisite gold leaf parchment. On the discovery of these works people travelled back in time to see what motivated the man to do it. Consequently; he spent so much time giving interviews to fawning acolytes and accepting kudos seven pages long, that he never got around to composing the things in the first place.

Get on with it!!

Kudos btw.

I have no plans to use the pics (i.e. digitally edit photos of SB etc.), just an observation. :) As far as ownership, I suspect that CBS owns the rights since they have the rights to Montel's show.

Perhaps a few thousand copies of Natural Cures and More Natural Cures to help fan the flames? Ya know, two sticks and all.

A noble and worthy cause, sir. I shall add your site to my links page.

Rob,
On a serious note.... We're not forgetting the reasons behind doing this. The post of Juliette(Julia) should remind us that this isn't a low-grade scam-artist-cum-delusional idiot like Kaz. This is the Great High Poobah, herself. Would that she was just an entertaining bit of fluff, but she actually does a great deal of harm.

I read through the bathos(pathos) in the following with utter horror.
http://www.healthdiaries.com/blogs/parentsfault/archives/2004/10/sylvia_brown.html

The original post is just meandering drivel. A little sad (well a lot sad), but for some reason she created a title "Sylvia Brown" for the thread. She doesn't say in the text that this was a visit to Sylvia. (I haven't seen reference anywhere else to Sylvia asking for stool samples.:eye-poppi ) But, through the miracle of Google, people looking for e-less Sylvia Brown were directed to this diary entry. They began to write requests to Sylvia.

Everyone with a few minutes should read them. This is like having a free portal into the stuff she must get every hour of every day. You can just cherry-pick the more desperate ones and rack up a fortune if you're a trained scam-artists(I mean "psychic"). There's enough nonsense and thankfully a few de-bunkers jump in, but this is going on for years, now and they're still posting their pleas to this erroneous location, as of today.

Without running the risk of libel suits you should try to get word out to some of the victims. (The temptation to say "suckers" needs to be avoided - some of them are surely just begging to be taken in, but others are so desperate that you want to weep for them.) The real valuable research would be to get your hands on narratives, which will need to be verified and proven, of some of the people who've been bilked and/or truly harmed pouring money down this dead-end drain. I think you'd need to have a private channel rather than have them post in a thread, i.e. make it like The Challenge - an entirely separate area for people who can prove they've been victimized. Cases like the one Juliette mentions are far too common for there NOT to be a number of people who would be willing to come forward.

On the down side, is this a shameless appeal to emotionalism? Yes, emphatically. It's a media war. Sylvia oohs and aaahs them with Montel and Larry carrying her nail polish kit. A good poster child for the victims would be the ideal counterfoil. And that sycophant Larry King would probably book such people on the show! "Live here in the studio, little Mary Taylor, had her piggy bank taken away by Sylvia Browne! We'll be right back!"
The facts will speak for themselves. But getting that information out there is the challenge. I think a good handful of actual victims' stories would be a good approach.

I almost lost my lunch when I read this on Montel's site:

1) We know you love Sylvia Browne, so aside from her show on Wednesdays, what is your favorite show of the week?

Perhaps a section with contact info for CBS and sponsors of the show to get her off the air.

Oh, sweet Jebus, I'm speechless.

I'm seriously wondering how these people get through the day without a keeper. I mean, half of the posters are just scared and confused and crying out for guidance, any guidance--or they hear voices and see ghosts. The other half are grieving. They miss their father, or their mother, or their friend, or their pets, and seem to mostly want closure.

Part of me wants to hug them and tell them everything will be all right, even though I know it probably won't be. Part of me wants to smack them upside the head and tell them to grow the hell up. And I can't seem to find a happy medium. I need to take a walk.
