Fight Science! Did anyone watch this?

Glen levy answers

Hello all,

This is Glen Levy from the fight science show you are discussing.

I am more than willing to answer any serious questions you may have.
I can be found at [email protected]

Thank you for your interest.

Glen

Yes the "Superman" quote........ type person guy

Hello All,

Thank you for,

A- Watching the show.
B- Asking questions before condemnation. lol

I really enjoyed being in that fun environment on the show with so many great martial artists, some of whom were and are still legends in my eyes.

Before this show we knew that when we hit someone they fell down, now we have more about why, how and with what force this happens which is really cool.

I can’t answer any questions about anyone else on the show but am more than willing to answer to the best of my ability about myself or what I do.

So ask away!

Hello, Glen -

Enjoyed the show, albeit I was a bit annoyed by how some of it was presented - not your fault, it's the way the producers chose to represent things. :)

Regarding your performance, let me cut to the chase - do you believe there's any mystical energy involved in your ability to generate impressive striking power?

And thanks for joining our community. :)

Mystical?
The word mystical seems to imply the unknown. Yes I do believe there is energy involved, but I see it more as electro-magnetic (the stuff our body runs on)
The power I generate is relatively simple.
It is a series of physics released like dominos so the output power is more like a whip.
It is pretty much like Bruce lee explained between a karate punch and a kung fu punch. My one goes "Whhaaaaaaaaannnngggg" and hurts on the inside.

There is a mix of four uses of centripetal force, the use of gravity a couple of small psoas and adducter contractions along with the use of Fa-jing (from Taiji Chuan)

As a side note I have never claimed to be an expert in anything let alone Ninjutsu.
I have been studying Martial arts as a whole every day for 24 years and trying to find links, differences and new discoveries. The “hammerfist” is something I designed and trained for a long time trying to work all the bugs out.
The show was the first time I was able to get actual readouts.

So to answer the question No.
I don’t believe there is a mystical energy involved as it has been proven for years as electro-magnetic and electro-chemical reaction.
Personally This is what I believe “Chi” is.

However this isn't what many people who beleve in "chi" claim. They claim "chi" is an internal energy force that can be manipulated to do things that can't be explained by science.

For instance...
Do you believe this "Chi" can manipulated to do damage to people without touching them? i.e. this "Chi" travels through the air from your body to theirs? That's what we mean when we say mystical.

P.S. to quote someone simply click the "quote" buttom under their post.

Thanks, Glen. I appreciate the response, and I agree - there's nothing "magical" about stuff like this. :)

We have different views on what martial qi is, but neither of us views it as something mystical... a nice change from some of the conversations I've had with other martial artists over the years. I think you'll find a number of practical MA's here in these forums.

Good show, impressive demo, and congrats on the exposure to the world! :)

Hello all, I'm a newby on this forum and am glad I found it, you guys know your stuff.

I must say what drew me here was that show, particularly the Glen Levy segment. Personaly, I've always had a passion for all martial arts, mostly ninjutsu, because of it's "get to the point" attitude, where matches are short and sweet without breaking too much of a sweat. I have a couple of questions for Glen, some of these were adressed previously on this forum:

1) Was your punch realy more powerful than that guy hitting the dummy with a bat? Did it hurt your hand? (Just kidding) The reason I ask this is because watching the show for the second time, I see that the woman suggests this, but never directly says that your strike was stronger than the batting guy.

2) Can you recommend any ninjutsu dojos in NYC, for children?

Thanks to all for this great forum.

Welcome Glen

I watched the last part of the show and was interested in the physics. But the history and the practice and patience is what really drew me in. I want to see if it will be rebroadcast to watch the entire show. What pulled me in originally was I thought it was FLIGHT science but this was even better.

It seemed that there was a mix of the various styles of fighting from China to the Samurai. I'll be better prepared when I post again. Welcome.

One disappointing thing about the show was the JKD guy doing the samurai thing, and not the fat guy, was really looking forward to him ripping that dummy apart.

I want to point out something very important here. People saying there is nothing 'mysical' or 'supernatural' about qi or anything else for that matter doesn't necessarly mean they don't believe it has qualities everyone else would consider supernatural.

I have heard people say "qi" can make humans do things like lift cars or fly or shoot beans or electricity from their hands and that it's all "natural" and nothing about that is supernatural since as they claim "science explains it".

Of course science couldn't possibly explain a human being flying through the air like superman or a human doing something like shooting electricty from their hands. However there are people out there who know absolutely nothing about science and believe this. So them saying "I don't believe qi is supernatural" doesn't really remove the chance they actually believe it can do things any reasonable person would call supernatural.

Good point, Dustin. All too often people confuse "mysterious" with mystical or supernatural... and yes, some people believe that mystical/supernatural powers exist, and are therefore "natural" in some way. :)

However, I'm accepting Glen's post at apparent face-value unless he posts something that changes my perception. :)

I'm just speaking with my personal experience with other 'martial artists' and their beleifs in 'chi' and whatnot. Those were the beleifs they had.

hm

a bit off the main discussion here but, mercer u say your opinion on qi differs from glens. I was wondering what you consider to be "qi" and how you explain it. I'm just curious to hear scientific explanations for it is all, I'm not mocking you or anything.

Also, dustin, I think it was probably a typo but if not can you tell me what martial art practices the technique to "shoot beans"?

I can't speak for Glen, but according to his comments it appears that he thinks qi is just another word for all the physical and biological processes involved in a strike.

Qi is a complex subject strictly because the use of the word is contextual. Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine means something quite different than what's referenced in Taoism - which defines multiple types of qi. Martial qi produces another spectrum of qi definitions.

Since I practice internal martial arts, I believe that the minimum definition of qi is the alignment of the bones and joints to conduct a direct contact from the ground to the point of contact with the target. I suspect that the definition goes a bit further than that, but I'm not prepared to discuss anything deeper. Rest assured, though, that my views on what else may constitute qi is also physical in nature. :)
