I imagine I'm posting this in an incredibly bad place, seeing as it's doubtful anyone will know the answer.

For my web site, Skeptical Analysis of the Paranormal Society (http://www.skepticalanalysis.com), I want to record a seance on video. I have no idea how to find someone who performs seances. I know I should probably post this in a believer forum, but I have the feeling I would get about a zillion ridiculous responses.

If anyone has investigated woo claims in the DFW Metroplex, especially ones that relate to seances, please let me know. I'm all for purchasing one in the name of debunking.

Thanks!

Two things...

1) What country are you in? That'll be pretty important if you want people to help you.
2) The link in the text of your post is broken, although the one in your signature is fine.

Do you have a local spirtualist church? They're usualy the best place to start.

I found a couple of Texas psychics on google you might could persuade:

http://www.marveena.com/ (Dallas, tx)

http://www.5starpsychicadvice.com/AlvinTexasPsychic.html (Alvin, tx)

http://www.mariesimpson.com/ (San Antonio, tx)

The last one seems to only do email and phone readings, but you could always try. And then there's the Spiritual Church in Austin, tx (Where I believe you're from?):

http://www.fscoa.org/

That would perhaps be a good idea, as brodski says. But it looks more like a trashed house than a church though.

ETA: I can't verify this, but it seems to be a list of psychics in Austin, tx: http://www.partypop.com/Categories/Fortune_Tellers/Austin.htm

ETA2: I don't know why I thought you were from Austin, but now I know where you're from, so here's a list of psychic mediums in Fort Worth: http://www.magicyellow.com/category/Psychic_Mediums/Fort_Worth_TX.html

Thanks everybody :) I was very tired last night, but apparently someone remembered where I live for me, so that's alright. Fort Worth, Texas. Land of cattle.

Thanks for the list, Thomas! I'm going to start in on it today. I just hope they won't object to a video recording. Hopefully I can come across someone that truly believes they have "powers". (snork)

Thanks again.

get the local free paper. The classified section will be chock full of psychics and other scam artists. Somewhere in there, could be spritualist church add or such.

The one in his text glommed on the ) which is why it didn't work.

Will this be a hidden camera recording, or will the woo know it's being recorded? I think if you do both you'll have remarkedly different outcomes.

It would be recorded with full knowledge. I would not feel comfortable sharing the experience (and video) online unless the medium was aware of what was going to happen. Just because I think someone else may be a fraud is no reason to be fraudulent about my intentions ;)

Oh, I'm sure. My hope is to either find someone desperate for business, or someone who is truly convinced of their own abilities. So far, no bites, but I'm going to keep trying.

The classic seance precludes skeptics. In other words, if skeptics participate, they won't get the classic results because they don't believe. Belief is a requirement for conducting a seance (their rules, not mine).

You might consider OBSERVING a seance conducted by believers.

Oh now that's just cheap.

I wonder, if a camera is in the room, is it counted as a skeptic?

You might set up two cameras at different angles to the seance table then leave the room and go to your car. In the car, put on a blindfold and blast Marilyn Manson on the stereo and try to keep your mind as un-skeptical as possible. No matter, you might still "ruin the vibes" so no spirits will appear. :)

*I'm rather disappointed your group didn't get to investigate any "haunted" sites. If I lived in TX, I'd go right to Dealy Plaza in Dallas. The section of street where JFK got it is a public thoroughfare. And with a little sweet talking, I bet you could get into the nearby Dallas PD HQ parking garage where Oswald got his bullet. In fact....I'm surprised none of the "ghost hunting" TV shows have latched onto this concept. With a little bit of fudging, I could slap together a show that'd pull decent prime time ratings.
