Aren't you tired of seeing that yet? Both CNN and Fox (among others) have had that headline for days now. Isn't all news "breaking"? Something like that should only be used for something as important as a "Special Report".

I half expect to soon see a story - "Breaking News: Still no word on developments in the Middle East". In other words, nothing new is happening.

These news channels still have not come up with a proper name for the war.
To them, it's just a 'crisis' ---

I suggest: "The Tamuz Tiff" (this is now the Hebrew month of Tamuz).

I agree, and I first became aware of that tendency during the O.J. Simpson chase (which lasted too long for continuous coverage). I was just waiting for a moment during the chase for an anchor to get a advertisement in; "O.J. appears to be smiling at police officers, it's apparent to us that he must use Pearl Drops tooth polish . . . "

And then, of course, there is the adverse, "Explosions reported in all major U.S. cities, film at 11:00." :)

Let me use this opportunity to say, yet again, that the news tickers at the bottom of the screen, instituted on 9/11 for good reason (for that day only) are emblematic of the total ***** that constitutes the 24-hour news channels.

3 cheers to Lewis Black, who insisted during an interview he was doing on CNN to have to the ticker and banner removed, and it was!
You guys -- and let me just say this to CNN -- you guys have got have got to start [to] take the thing off the bottom of the page. Take the words off the bottom of the screen! There are people talking here.

annoying though you find the attention catching "breaking news" banner, it didn't stop you you using it to spice up your title....thus conning me into looking at a thread in which i have no interest.....oh the irony! :)

I still remember. 1984. The Philadelphia Eagles were threatening to move their franchise to another city. The local Philly news stations were all over the story for weeks.

One day, breaking news! We interrupt your program to tell you the mayor of Philly and the owner of the Eagles are now crossing the street to go to lunch during an intermission in the negotiations to keep the Eagles in Philly!

I am so glad I didn't miss this vital piece of news the very moment it was happening.

And that was way before the flood of 24 hour news channels.

Don't forget the vital world financial information we needed when a camera crew caught Alan Greenspan on the way to the office. His briefcase: fat or thin?

Damn! I was just complaining about this to a friend on Sunday. CNN had as breaking news, "Israel missles hit Beirut". How can that be "breaking news" when it's been going on for 3 days?
