XP font help. Please?!

Use the "Classic View" option for Control Panel. The Fonts icon will appear, whereas it does not appear in the "Category View" for Control Panel. Install the font by using the menu commands:

File => Install New Font

I usually make sure that "Copy to fonts folder" is enabled. Browse to the folder where your new font is located--this should not be the Windows fonts folder. Select the font(s) you want to install. Click Ok. Close the Fonts window, etc.

The new font should appear in your application's font list. I just did the above and it worked fine. No reboot required.

That's not what I mean. The first response to the OP was "Drag and drop in: C:\WINDOWS\Fonts"

My reply to that advice was "As Alphaba said, then reboot to ensure the system recognises the new fonts."

If you don't reboot after dragging and dropping into the Fonts folder, the system does not recognise the new font. Yes?

I just did that and my system recognized the font without having to reboot.

Sometimes, the Windows font folder loses the autoinstall capability (I've seen it referred to as "losing its magic"). This problem can be repaired by using the Windows TweakUI PowerToy:

One way to check for the problem is to open the Windows\Fonts folder and see if the File => Install New Font menu item is missing.

Yes, that's what I said in my post above. And it's a good idea to reboot after you install new fonts if you want said program to recognise them.

I hate fonts (sorry just ranting.)

When work adopted two new official fonts it was my job to get them working on about 3000 computers.

I wrote a program that copied them to c:\windows\fonts with a vbscript. Here are my findings using this method:

about 10% of the computers will show the fonts and print the fonts correctly with no further action.
about 80% of the computers will work, if you open the Fonts control panel after copying the fonts.
about 10% will not work until a reboot is done.

I modified the program to open the fonts control panel for the user after installing the fonts. We distributed this version and told users if the fonts didn't activate they would need to reboot.

Thanks for all the advice, evryone.
I needed to save a tengwar font for a tattoo one of the wife's customers requested. Crazy (rule 8) business!
