FBI detains 7 in domestic terror probe

Seven people are in custody after a sweep by law enforcement authorities in connection with an alleged plot against targets that may have included the Sears Tower, officials told CNN on Thursday.

Officials said no weapons or bomb-making materials had been found in the searches in the Miami area by FBI and state and local law enforcement officials. The city is under no imminent threat, according to the FBI.

Law enforcement sources told CNN that the arrests disrupted what may have been the early stages of a domestic terrorist plot to attack the Sears Tower in Chicago, Illinois, the FBI building in Miami, and possibly other targets.

CNN is also reporting that the cell was infiltrated by an FBI agent who posed as an al Qaeda handler.

A couple of remarks in the article caught my eye:

So they had gradiose plans but not a clue how to carry them out.

However, senior federal sources told CNN, "These people were not related to al Qaeda." When asked whether they were al Qaeda wannabes, he replied, "possibly."

Wannabees--and not particulary smart ones either. It is good to know that we can catch the truly wacked out loons who haven't a clue about how to run a conspriacy or undergorund operation.

I do hope that we are doing as well in countering those who know something about how the game of terrorism is done--those we may not hear about on CNN, but can only judge their success on what does--or hopefully, does not--happen in the future.

Not so fast. I read somewhere else (hanged if I can find the link) that said they raided one of the guy's apartments and found some empty wine bottles, a bed with sheets on it, and a car with almost eight gallons of gasoline parked on the street. Pretty suspicioius, if you ask me...

...to cause a person to commit a crime by means of undue persuasion, encouragement or fraud in order to later prosecute.

Now, are you claiming that it was the authorities who caused these people to commit a crime that they would not otherwise have committed? Are you also saying that the authorities did this by means of undue persuasion, encouragement or fraud? And are you saying that they did this simply to prosecute these guys later on?

If this is, in fact, what you are saying, let's hear the evidence.

Possibly. It depends on the specifics of the situation. Of course, at this point we've only heard the Feds' side, so any allegations of entrapment (if any) won't be substantiated for a while yet.
