Now THIS is Free Speech!

You guys have it all wrong. Clearly Beeps is warning us that the page to which he linked has the Exploding Liquid Markup Language enabled, causing serious damage to your mouth lining and esophagus if you were to be drinking while reading it. Beeps' mistake is not knowing that the Exploding Liquid Transport Protocol hasn't been finalized by the appropriate Internet standards groups and no browser currently supports it. So really, much ado about nothing.

Back in the early 1060's, when I was a young lad, there was a sitcom called I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, starring John (Gomez Addams) Astin and Marty Ingles as a couple of carpenters. There was one episode I only dimly remember where one of them told a joke that he thought was hilarious; the other didn't think it was at all funny. So they asked their boss, who declared it was funny, but in a monotone, with a deadpan face that would have won him the final pot at the world championship of poker.

They started asking the rest of the guys in the shop. Some of them thought it was funny, some didn't. The emotions started boiling to the surface, and towards the end, a mob of angry carpenters entered (stage right), brandishing hammers and crowbars, and yelling, "It was a funny joke!" and from stage left came the other carpenters, waving tools and yelling, "It was not!"

The guys who didn't think it was funny were all Democrats. It's true! :)

Jeeze, this thread is confirming a theory I'd had in the back of my mind for a while, not that my purpose in starting it was to get that confirmation: Lefties/liberals are often a surly, humorless lot.

Look, I don't agree with a lot of his signs. But I thought it was hilarious that he'd go and put his foaming-at-the-foul-mouth rants on public display in front of his restaurant. But the lefties here are looking first to see if they agree with his messages, and when they don't, start picking on his spelling.

Jeeze.

I guess the Unhinged Left is also the Angry, Humorless Left. I suppose Margaret Cho is y'all's patron saint. :p

Just because someone doesn't think you're funny doesn't mean they are humorless, nor does it mean they disagree with your politics. It generally just means that you are not funny, and the things you find funny are stupid.

The signs are not funny. The statements themselves were not funny, the fact that he put them on public display is not funny. Funny is a guy pushing for America united under one language who can't write in the language he is pushing for. Funny is the fact that he sells hats with his signs on them.

Imagine how pissed off he would be if he had to push 2 for English.

I'm laughing really hard at this, but my voice is too screwed up after attending a metal concert this evening (Strapping Young Lad). Sounds really awful...but thanks for that!

Yeah, you do that.

After all, it's 21704 posts long and I've never posted there ... so that's well up to the usual standard of your ideas.
DA, stop - it's embarrasing. You're sounding like the guy trying desperately to explain to his date why he's not boring.

Up until a year or two ago, some guy with a piece of property along the main highway between Carson City and Reno used to put up homemade signs that the ones in the OP remind me a lot of. Sometimes they would make sense, and sometimes they were almost incomprehensible. But they teneded to revolve around the same pet issues and even have the same bad spelling/grammar.

There must be a 'crackpot gene' that also affects the part of the brain controlling spelling and grammar....

? Never saw those signs. 'Course, I'm usually the one driving when we're going to Tahoe from Reno. Have to ask Mrs. BPSCG if she ever noticed.

The humor will be lost in the explanation, I'm afraid.

More's the pity.

The signs are clear, concise, and to whichever particular point the sign's owner is trying to convey. There are no jokes, puns, plays on words, or anything like that. They aren't particularly extreme or outrageous, aside from the occasional profanity, which isn't enough to make them funny on its own - but then, I didn't think "The Aristocrats" was funny either, so perhaps I'm the wrong person to ask.

I had some iced tea in my mouth when I saw the site, and nothing happened.

Er, no.

I'm like a guy patiently explaining to a conceited bore that the fact that his "joke" has fallen flat does not prove that everyone who didn't laugh is lacking a sense of humor.

In fact, that wasn't so much an accurate simile as an accurate discription of the actual situation.

I see that you were able to provide neither.

Maybe you should now get over the fact that this wasn't funny, instead of explaining to us that it is.

You remind me ... what do you remind me of ... oh yes, a guy trying desperately to explain to his date that the reason she thinks he's boring and all the other people in the bar thinks he's boring is because they're all stupid.

I can understand why you find this embarrassing and would wish me to stop drawing attention to it, but I'm enjoying myself.

What did the USA find?

Forget about "American freedoms", too.

Advocating a religious tyranny.

Total idiocy.

Racist.

Learn how to spell.

"If you disagree with me, you're closeminded."

Yeah, your name is as American as can be...

Evidence?

Why should we cheer stupidity?

"If you disagree with me, you're an Unhinged, Angry, Humorless Left".

North Versailles, PA is less than ten miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

What's that in real measurements?

The humor will be lost in the explanation, I'm afraid.

So you don't understand it either?

If you won't explain it, then we won't understand.

If you can't explain it, then you don't understand.

Er... I've just read the menu. Can anyone explain what "Scrod" is?
Old joke (there seems to be a rule against jokes on this thread, but hey, I'm a rebel).

Lady (to taxi driver) : Can you take me anywhere I can get scrod?

Taxi driver : Geez, ma'am, I never heard that word in the pluperfect subjunctive before.

Depends on which way you took from Tahoe to Reno. They were in Washoe Valley, along Hwy 395, Hanging from the limb of a tree.

And I don't know how recently you were through, but when I think about it, I don't recall seeing one for about two years.

Yeah, that's the route (is there another from south LT through Carson City to Reno?) Anyway, she doesn't recall ever seeing it; was it really prominent?

Nah, I just wasn't thinking (only halfway through my first coffee) there IS another route from Tahoe to Reno, but it doesn't pass through Carson, and is only practical if you are on the North Shore to start with.

The signs were hanging from a tree and were in an area where there are a few small businesses and ranches (no, not the kind of ranches Nevada is famous for ;) ) and such with signs along the road. So it could have blended in if you weren't paying attention. Come to think of it, I don't think I noticed them until my wife (who drives that route to work every day) pointed it out to me. But it kind of became a gmae when driving along that route, for us to see what the crazy old man was putting up next.
