Terrorism arrests in Canada

The article makes no mention at all of the possible motivations of the suspects but does note "All the men arrested were residents of Canada and most are Canadian citizens" meaning some are immigrants. Can I go out on a limb here and speculate that the men were muslims, or does that make me a racist? And if they are, what does the refusal of the CBC to identify them as such say about political correctness in Canada?

It does mention that some had attended "terrorist training camps". This makes me think Muslim Terrorist. Maybe the police have not released details yet. I hope it's not some form of Political Correctness.

Searching around a bit, I found this AP story as published by the Kansas City Star:
"The men arrested yesterday are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds. For various reasons they appeared to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida," said Luc Portelance, the assistant director of operations with CSIS - Canada's spy agency.
Seems they want to dance around it w/o actually saying it, don't want to offend the "religion of peace" maybe?

No, I'm sorry but you're being racist, religionist and probably some other ist I haven't thought of yet.

In completely and wholly unrelated news, the RCMP has named some of the people arrested.

1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, of Robinstone Drive, Toronto, Ontario;
2. Zakaria Amara, 20, of Periwinkle Crescent, Mississauga, Ontario;
3. Asad Ansari, 21, of Rosehurst Drive, Mississauga, Ontario;
4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, of Lowville Heights, Mississauga, Ontario;
5. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, of Montevideo Road, Mississauga, Ontario;
6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ontario;
7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston, Ontario;
8. Jahmaal James, 23, of Trudelle Street, Toronto, Ontario;
9. Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, of Stonehill Court, Toronto, Ontario;
10. Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, of Treverton Drive,
Toronto, Ontario;
11. Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, of Robin Drive, Mississauga, Ontario;
12. Saad Khalid, 19, of Eclipse Avenue, Mississauga, Ontario.

Oh, I see my speculation was way off. Looks like a fine group of hockey-stick-waving all-Canadian kids who have nothing to do w/ radical Islam. I apologize to all for my baseless accusations not at all grounded in the present-day realities of the world.

Yes, but that was just the adults. It's not legal in Canada but since I'm in the US I can tell you exclusively that the minors were named Guy DuBois, Stephen Cote, Pierre Lapierre, Mike Smith and one Inuit-looking name I can't spell.

Or, just maybe, not.

Or perhaps CBC doesn't want to speculate, given that a large newspaper was recently very wrong in it's reporting?

EDIT:
My mistake. Should have refresed the page.

They talk about motive here

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/06/03/D8I0QCG80.html

"The men arrested yesterday are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds. For various reasons they appeared to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida," said Luc Portelance, the assistant director of operations with CSIS _ Canada's spy agency.

"The Toronto Star reported Saturday that Canadian youths in their teens and 20s, upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide, were among those arrested."

The RCMP found 3 tons of Ammonium Nitrate! Wasn't the Oklahoma Bombing the result of 1 ton of the same?.

The Oklahoma Bombing was a controlled demolition using a nuclear thermite device. You obviously haven't been following along.

The time of the RCMP press release Manny linked to was 10:00 Eastern, the CBC story last updated at 11:50 still doesn't have the info. Stinks of PC to me.

This story at the Star seems to have the most detailed account (according to their sources) about the investigation and in regards to motive.

I've just listened to an interview with Toronto Mayor David Miller and police chief Bill Blair. It is obvious that they don't want to stir up some sort of anti- Muslim backlash. Miller expressed surprise that these were "Canadian Citizens", a phrase which he repeated several times. I guess cultural and ethnic roots which are so important in guiding our social policies, have absolutely no influence in this case?? The Chief said he knew when the bombings were to be carried out but refused to give dates or targets.

3 tonnes of ammonium nitrate? Clearly they were start-up farmers. They were getting the fertilizer first, the land second. I think we are rushing to judgement.

And just because they all have Muslim names doesn't mean jack.

3 tonnes of ammonium nitrate?

wow....bet that was hard to find.....bet the whole street stunk of ◊◊◊◊ :D

It does smell, but not of ****. I grew up around farms. It has an acrid ammonia-like smell (not like piss but that's the closest I can get in describing it). It isn't overwhelming unless aerated.

lol ok :D

i should give more thought to my flippant comments :)

So far the most obtuse quote I've read...

Jun. 4, 2006. 01:00 AM

Lawyer Rocco Galati, who represented two of the accused men, complained to Justice of the Peace John Farnum that the presence of the armed officers violated his clients' constitutional rights, saying: "I do not feel safe with an automatic weapon facing in my direction."

Galati also complained about the leg irons on the accused, and asked Farnum to order police to give his clients a Qur'an.
(emphasis mine)

How dare Canadians "oppress" the accused terrorists with leg irons and armed officers...and to top that oppression off the fascist Canadians didn't automatically allow the accused access to their beloved Qur'ans.

Oh, the endless crimes of the Canadians! :rolleyes:

Funny how he didn't demand they be given iPods with "O! Canada" on them.
