Detroit area 'psychics' being regulated...

Hey, that's great!

If only others would follow suit. We have regulatory laws in the UK but they're practically useless and almost never lead to a prosecution (and certainly not recently).

Laws like this, however, are designed to stop the obvious frauds, they can do nothing against those who claim to have real powers, because they lack the facility or ability to test them.

I wish they would put a law on the books that a medium or fortune-teller can only set up shop after winning Randi's million dollar challenge.

But after winning the million we have to burn them. It's in the bible and if a psychic is for real then God is probably for real too.

I still like how the person quoted, says that her readings are "just for entertainment".

Bet her sign out front doesn't stress that!

"She said the 10 psychics she employs underwent a strenuous interview process before they were hired, largely because she was aware of the potential for frauds in the psychic community."

I don't believe it... Frauds in the psychic community? Are they genuine or what?

You'd think being a psychic would make the interview unnecessary.

"said Carole Navarre, who owns the Boston Tea Room in Wyandotte but is not a psychic."

Well how a non psychic can tell a real psychic from a fraud is beyond me. I think the interview is more about how good you are at acting superior and talking bs.

Psychics are genuine frauds perhaps?

I've cross-posted this in the "Favourite Classic 'Psychics'" thread...

Seems that Detroit-area 'psychics' are upset because of proposed regulation, to weed out the frauds. Heh.

Here's the link, from the Detroit Free Press:

If only it were not just a small number of suburbs. The total population of the towns mentioned in that story is quite small relative to the rest of the Detroit metro area.

There is a psychic shop less than a mile from where I live. They advertise on local cable and are only about 200 yards from the police department. To bad Westland, Michigan has no such law.

Last year Channel 4 WDIV www.clickondetroit.com did an expose on local pyschic in Utica, MI
The psychic would ask clients for a few hundred dollars to get rid of the "evil spell" or whatever. She asked one client to buy her a large screen TV at local appliance store. They sent undercover reporter and she told him to get rid of the "evil spell" on him, would require her to buy $200 worth of products at Home Depot store (large chain of home improvement stores) with gift certificate. He asked what she needed but she said only she could get it.
SO they gave her the $200 gift certificate, turns out she bought kitchen cabinets. I guess those help get rid of "evil spells". ;-)

Oh yeah, I remember that! Well, you know, even 'psychics' need to spruce up the place a little. After all, how can they get the high-paying clients, if they don't look successful? :)

There's also a place in Livonia that does readings. I'm not sure if they're in the 'entertainment' business, or if they're serious on their claims.
I've been thinking of dropping in one day just to see.
