More French riots

The government has no right to prevent groups of youths gathering in towns. They need to look at the real issues like unemployment to solve the problem, simpl imposing a ban will not work.
Emphasis mine.

Really? What if the youths are gathering for the purpose of murdering all left-handed people in the neighborhood? The government has no right to prevent or break up such a gathering?

Sure, to the point there's hardly a car left on our roads these times ...

Anyway, this is nothing, wait until the soccer world cup starts ...

I don't understand your logic. Are you saying that, since:

a) There are plenty of cars left on the roads of France, and;
b) Riots caused by football events are far worse,

Then these daily riots and car fires are not a serious problem for France?
If that is not what you are saying, can you please clarify. Thanks.

The government has a right to arrest people who are breaking the law. If they have to break up the group to do it, then so be it.

The point was that unless they are commiting an offense they should not be forced to disperse.

You don't understand, Cheese, you advocated individual rights, and around here that means you hate your country and you love Saddamn.

Anything you say can and will be taken in an extreme fashion, shoved in your face, repeatedly, and you will be accused of all sorts of things you didn't say.

Things like, when pointing out that Bush dodged the draft, that what you really mean is that all Guardsmen dodged the draft, even though nobody said such a thing. It's just easier to make things like that up, you see, than to defend the prior behavior of one's idol.

Things like arguing that we've created more terrorists that we've killed in Iraq are somehow the same as wanting to keep Saddamn in power, and supporting Al-Quaida.

That's how the logic works around the politics forum. You dare to ask a question, you dare to wonder about the great and mighty leader, and you're an enemy of the people, never mind that the sewers are indeed way too close to the pipes that feed the baths.

So, you blame Bush...err current political climate in the US for the riots in France?

Brilliant.

So "The government invoked emergency powers to quell what was the worst unrest in mainland France in nearly 40 years." means little then? I could have sworn there have been World Cups with in the last 40 years, some even in France.

jj, wipe the foam off your mouth, or I'm going to have to order Jocko to turn the cameras on again. Cheesejoff made an absolute statement, to wit, "The government has no right to prevent groups of youths gathering in towns." He did not qualify that statement in any way. I was bringing him up short because the statement as it stands is clearly absurd, and he pretty much acknowledged as such in his followup post. He's new around here, and if he doesn't want to get beaten up time and again for sloppy writing, he'll have to be more careful. We have enough trouble understanding each other here, even when we write clearly and precisely.

Indeed, thank you for pointing that out.

However note that I didn't say "the government has no right to prevent groups of youths gathering whatsoever in any circumstance". I didn't say when it didn't apply, but merely leaving out conditions does not mean they don't exist. When someone says "freedom of speech means the right to say whatever you want" they don't mean you have the right to promote, say, the mass murder of the jewish people.

However in future I shall be more careful and point out the conditions on all my claims.

:) Didn't mean to be hard on you; there are people here who post nonsense like "All rights are absolute." Just trying to ascertain whether you were one of them or not.

So, you had to make up another false position for me? Good demonstration of my point, albiet one you probably didn't intend.

The discussion wasn't about our draft-dodger-in-chief, it was about the performance of the debaters here, and you made my point so, so well.

Blah blah blah, stop derailing threads.

Just turn the thing around: imagine that this is happening in, say, L.A. (as it has happened in the past), and I go: "I try to care.... but I just can't. Does that make me bad?".

What would you think of me?

That we reap what we sow and that's a fitting bounty?

'Tis, IMO.

LA included.

Some things cannot be much foreseen, but this one certainly could from a couple of decades and social movements away. We're going through the same thing now with Mexican (illegal) immigration. The legislation on the table almost ensures we will soon have burning cars in streets (or worse).

Our bad...and others from other lands may take interest, but should still shrug and say...your bad.
