The Dixie Chicks

Do you think their sudden public rediscovery and proclamation of their principles has anything to do with trying to sell albums?

I agree. I like the way they took Landslide, for example, and turned it banjo. That takes cajones.

My current goal is do a banjo version of Only the Good Die Young. Need to get my g-string replaced, but I'm going to do it.

I don't need to hear about your G-string. :p

I'm a clawhammer picker myself; I can do Scruggs style, but I'd be lying if I said I was any good at it.

This is my 6,000th post. Free beer for everyone! The next poster is buying!

If the past couple years constitute continued defiance then what do the six or eight years previous to that constitute? Continued deception?
I really don't know. And neither do you. I do know that people develop and modify opinions all the time. Pretty simple.

Or perhaps they were honest then too but they simply changed their minds at some point.
Right.

Changing your mind is fine but they could've started giving their political opinions while simultaneously showing a little more respect for their long time audience. Instead they basically said "Now that we've got a bunch of money from you dumb hicks we can start calling you dumb hicks to your faces."
Really? That's what they "basically said?"

It's easy to have the courage of your convictions when you have a big bank account to back it up.
Your cynicism is noted. But your rationale is not supported.

I would be lying if I said I could do anything but tune the dang thing, and that is just with a tuning wave file. I am still at the stage of simple, simple strumming (guitar-like, even)

I have no musical talent, and am doing it on my own, but one of the goals of my life is to be able to pick Shave-and-a-Haircut efficiently (such lofty goals!)

I need to work on strums. I was watching Grandpa Jones on a HeeHaw DVD and realized he only used one chord in the entire song he played. I can do that, but I have to know how to strum the dang thing (Jones just pounded it)

Who knows? But considering they've been rather consistent for the past 3 years I'd guess not so much.

Do you think their public and commercial backlash has anything to do with the Right's desire that good girls should mind their manners and let the men do the talkin'?

Aaaaah, here we go. I was wondering how long it would take for you to spit out what your point actually was. I'm sad to say I'm not surprised.

Do you have any evidence that suggests that the Dixie Chicks fortunes have turned based on misogyny instead of their gift for insulting a sizeable chunk of their fan base? (I apologize in advance if you're the only one allowed to throw out leading questions)

Let me ask you this, Regnad: Do you think the Dixie Chicks have a right to live free from consequences of their public positions?

Right.

How is it that neither of use know whether the DC were deceiving their public all those years when they were popular, but you do know that they were honest all those years but simply changed their minds at some point?

From a cnn.com article:

Maines was quoted in late January on EW.com, before the single went to country radio, saying: "For me to be in country music to begin with was not who I was ... I would be cheating myself ... to go back to something that I don't wholeheartedly believe in. So I'm pretty much done. They've shown their true colors. I like lots of country music, but as far as the industry and everything that happened ... I couldn't want to be farther away from that."

She says being in country music to begin with was not who she was, and yet she mamaged to get into country music and become a star and stay one for several years. And on top of that she had the word "Dixie" in the name of her band! For someone who thinks she didn't belong in country music to begin with she managed to do a pretty good impersonation for several years of someone that did want to be there.

Jones played clawhammer/frailing style (there's really no difference, except that "frailing" indicated more "strumming" with the back of your hand). That style is kinda hard to pick (har!) up on without anyone actually *teaching* you--because you strike down on the string(s) with the back of your middle finger.

If you're just looking for some basics, you might want to consider up-picking--what's sometimes called "Seeger style." (The reason being that Pete Seeger wrote a book about how to do it.) It's a little easier to coordinate when you're beginning and lets you get a feel for the rhythm.

Why isn't Neil Young getting a lot more heat for his new songs?

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door

He’s the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war

Let’s impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones

And so on...

Tell me, if the DC had been as outspoken about their politics from the start, what chance do you think they'd have had at making a living in country music? Answer: None. Maybe they were withholding their opinions all along just to get money from an audience they knew the opinions would alienate. Or maybe they didn't hold those opinions back then and they honestly had a change of heart, in which case showing a little grace towards an audience that had supported them so much would've been the decent thing to do.

From time.com's website:
Three years ago they apologized for dissing the President. Now, they're back with a new album - and a retraction of the apology
So it sounds like they haven't been all that consistent.

Do you think their public and commercial backlash has anything to do with the Right's desire that good girls should mind their manners and let the men do the talkin'?
I have no idea what their past, present, and future fans think. I know when I go to a play, a movie, or a concert, I want to see a play, a movie, or a concert. I don't go to a John McCain speech hoping to hear him sing, and I don't go to the Alexandria Symphony hoping to hear the conductor tell me his political views. Especially if the marquee doesn't say, "The Alexandria Symphony Performs the Collected Works of William F. Buckley."

In other words, if you're not going to perform what I have a reasonable expectation you're going to perform, then give me my money back.

Agreed. I think she's trying to add more fans that eschew popular country music by making the weak claim that they weren't really country music to start with.

Their career is probably going to go the way of k.d. lang.
