I will be paying attention to see if there is a corresponding change in the rhetoric issuing forth from the Fox News talkers.

Rupert Murdoch, the conservative media mogul whose New York Post tabloid savaged Hillary Clinton's initial aspirations to become a US senator for New York, has agreed to host a political fundraiser for her re-election campaign

It'd make sense. Hillary running for Democrat Prez in '08 is the surest way to get a Republican elected.

What better foe than a tried and true punching bag for whom you already have masses of hate material ready made? IMO They just want to make sure she beats Feingold and Warner, both of which could win and both of which might actually desire and be able to create change from the status quo.

I wonder. People said much the same about Bill's candidacy in the begining, too.

She has too much baggage, I think. I could be wrong. She'd still be the perfect candidate for Republicans to run against.

I'm against her running because it feels too much like working a loophole in the 22 Amendment. Bill and Hillary were such a package deal, it'd be like having a 3rd, if not 4th, term Clinton Presidency.

It isn't exactly the same, but I'd feel similarly if Jeb Bush ran. It'd be too much "in the family", y'know?

I don't have a problem with her bringing Bill back to the White Hourse, per se, but I do get a bad taste of dynastic politics from the prospect of Bush>Clinton>Bush>Clinton.

No, an Al Sharpton / Dennis Kucinich slate would be the perfect one for the Republicans to run against.

If I were Hillary, I would decline Mr. Murdoch's gracious offer, having in mind the recent White House Press Correspondents' dinner. What would she do if it turned out Murdoch invited someone she didn't much care for as the featured speaker?

Say, Ann Coulter?

That is an excellent term for the situation.

I think Hillary would be very different from Bill, but if she were not, would that be such a bad thing?

For certain a-hole Republicans to run against, yes. For the ones who are so weak themselves they need an opponent the likes of Sharpton, Hillary, or Kucinich to run against.

The best thing that could happen to the Republican Party is for the Democrats to put a strong candidate up for Presidential nomination.

I am old enough to remember the days in the 70s when it was the Republicans who couldn't get their act together and were having their asses handed to them all over the map. Pre-Reagan. That's how I got into politics when I was younger. I got in the conservative movement to get the Right's act together. Those were the truly good times. Lean and true.

Now the party is corrupt with power and greed and has forgotten its roots, as highlighted by your next part:

Say, Ann Coulter?

Ann Coulter. What a sad freaking state of affairs that this is what the voice of the Right has come to be.

Jesus H. Christ.

ETA: Where are the Buckleys and Kemps?

Are you suggesting that (gasp) competition might be a good thing in politics?

Next you're going to suggest that congressional gerrymandering should end.

I was just suggesting she would do a right-wing hatchet job on Hillary like Colbert did on Bush last week - not that she is the voice of the right.

Right here. Buckley, anyway. This is where the intelligent, thoughtful right hangs out.

The attack dogs are... well, you know where to find them already.

A hatchet job from Coulter would probably boost Hillary's popularity.

Well, you probably realize that since I mentioned Buckley and Kemp, I am well aware of National Review. I was a longtime subscriber in the 70s and 80s. :)

Maybe its time to re-subscribe, though. It was an outstanding publication back then. I hope it still is.

I disagree with the comparison. Colbert is a comedian.
Well, the jury still seems to be out on his performance at the correspondents' dinner.

Meanwhile, this from a Diane Sawyer interview with Coulter:
Diane: You are going to be on the New York Times bestseller list slugging it out with Hillary Clinton.
Ann:I hope so.
Diane: Who is going to win?
Ann: Umm, Well I think she has a three to one pound advantage over me, but we will see.
Diane: (stunned silence for a moment as her jaw drops and eyes bug out) Three to one pound advantage? Did you just say what I think you said?
Ann: You said 'slugging it out with Hillary'
Diane: So you are just talking about arm wrestling?
Ann: Yes, if that is your phraseology.
Diane: (Going for the quick interview wrap up) Alright, Ann Coulter. As we've said, if you want your veins to be bulging, your pulse to be pounding and you really want somethng provocative the book is 'Treason' and it is out today. You can go to the ABC News Website if you want to see more about it and read more exerpts. (Diane, still flustered, holds the back of the book to the camera to a national television audience)
You don't think that, with a microphone, an audience, and Hillary, she could have a lot of fun at Senator Clinton's expense?

I'm telling you, Murdoch is trying to set her up.

Fox News

Fox News will back the Republican candidate, it makes no difference who it is. If it were Bush again, they would back him.

I don't get it. Was she calling Hillary fat? Or is 3-to-1 a metaphorical reference to some other kind of advantage? I don't think fat jokes about someone who's not actually fat are great comedic material.

What surprised me was when I clicked on the source link and discovered that it was a pro-Coulter site. I thought it was an incredibly unflattering exchange for Coulter.

Ah, perception colored by worldview.
