I have heard it. I have read the transcript. And I still don't believe he delivered this speech right in front of the President.

Choice quotes:
To actually sit here, at the same table with my hero, George W. Bush, to be this close to the man. I feel like I'm dreaming. Somebody pinch me. You know what? I'm a pretty sound sleeper -- that may not be enough. Somebody shoot me in the face. Is he really not here tonight? Dammit. The one guy who could have helped.

I believe the government that governs best is the government that governs least. And by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq.

I believe in pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. I believe it is possible -- I saw this guy do it once in Cirque du Soleil. It was magical. And though I am a committed Christian, I believe that everyone has the right to their own religion, be you Hindu, Jewish or Muslim. I believe there are infinite paths to accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior.

So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't.

As excited as I am to be here with the president, I am appalled to be surrounded by the liberal media that is destroying America, with the exception of Fox News. Fox News gives you both sides of every story: the president's side, and the vice president's side.

But the rest of you, what are you thinking, reporting on NSA wiretapping or secret prisons in eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason: they're super-depressing. And if that's your goal, well, misery accomplished. Over the last five years you people were so good -- over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.

But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know - fiction!

Everybody asks for personnel changes. So the White House has personnel changes. Then you write, "Oh, they're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." First of all, that is a terrible metaphor. This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!

Was GWB "amused"?

I thought the Pres did a fair job with his stand-up .. "When I met Dick in the hall (raising arms above head) 'Don't Shoot!' ". :D

His routine could have used a bit of editing but overall I thought it was very funny.

The liberal blogosphere is pointing out that Colbert's performance (and Bush's reaction to it) are being blacked out in the MSM.

Has anyone here who has witnessed any reporting on the evening in the regular news shows noticed that they also mention Colbert?

What was Bush's reaction to it? What is MSM? Was the event even reported by anyone, much less Colbert's piece?

Bush's (and Laura's) reported reaction was cold and rigid -- unhappy. MSM = "main stream media," which I use here to refer to regular news shows on networks + CNN, MSNBC, Fox News. Correspondents' Dinner is reported on by MSM every year, and I heard it reported this weekend extensively, but no mention of Colbert that I noticed.

Only in Washington can even comedy become controversy. For the city’s 2006 version of the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, organizers went after one of the hottest names in show business for the post-dinner entertainment – Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert. They got him but now do they wished they hadn’t? It appears Colbert may have violated the rules of official Washington with a comedy routine that may have had more attendees cringing than laughing.

What Colbert did to the president and the press corps is news: He didn't shoot anybody Saturday night at the Hinckley Hilton, but he laid them out in just about every other way imaginable. It was as an "Emperor's New Clothes" moment played out with George W. Bush and his court forced to watch, and you ought to have seen it and talked about it and read reporting and analysis on it by now.

It's not your fault if you haven't. The Washington Post had a few not-quite-getting-the-point mentions of Colbert's act, but Colbert didn't get half the ink the paper spilled on appearances by George Clooney and Morgan Fairchild and other celebrities at Bloomberg's after-party. The New York Times' Elisabeth Bumiller wrote almost 1,000 words on the annual dinner this year, but not one of them was "Colbert."

I am appaled that the Liberal media would supress the words of a great Conservative American like Steven Colbert. Their Liberal bias is...err..what was that? Colbert only pretends to be a Conservative? Of course he does, we all do! What? He's actually a Liberal and he's been making fun of us this whole time? That's unbelieveable, I've been watching his show every night. I always agree with him. That means he's always right!

Evidently, the issue is that at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the comedy is traditionally supposed to be aimed more or less equally at both the president and the press. It seems that this year, it was almost all aimed at the Bush.

Link.

When the Press starts wrecking other countries, as well as our own, we'll make fun of the Press too.

True...and after seeing the video I felt a little bad for Bush but the more I thought about it the more I felt "Bush...F him. He deserves it."

I can't imagine walking in there and doing a set like that. These days nobody seems to have a sense of humor in politics. Some are complaining that he was supposed to attack both the media and the administration and that he only attacked the administration. Colbert does have to pander to his audience though who are primarily from the left (Though, I find his show pretty funny. I think John Stewart is funnier. I'd watch both their shows more but they're on opposite O'Reilly.)

Having to do a comedy set in front of that crowd is no win. Colbert does have huge ones.

This is supposed to be one of the big social events of the year, and everyone is supposed to be fair game, from both parties, and including the press. Otherwise it becomes an invitation to come to a party so you can get punched non-stop, and have to sit there and take it.

The last time there was a big dustup over this event was when Clinton was president and Don Imus did the monologue. He went after the Clintons with guns blazing, but he also went after the fifth estate and politicians of every stripe. Nobody in the room was safe.

Republican presidential candidates over the years have stopped accepting invitations to speak to the NAACP during the campaigns because when they get there, nobody cares about what they might have to say; it becomes a big "let's bash the Republican candidate" party.

Be a shame if that starts happening with the Correspondents' Dinner.

is this the same annual event where Bush was jokingly looking for the WMDs under the podium and his notes a couple of years ago?

Because that was hysterical and inoffensive.

Look at the tape...he went after the press for being the toadies they've become.

As to taste, remember last year George Bush had a video of himself looking under a sofa for WMD's...I'm sure that image is a great comfort to the parents and family of soldiers who have died in Iraq.

you might want to try watching the video, because Colbert does attack several members of the press, Jesse Jackson, McCain, and many, many people. Few were safe.

Or you can rant in ignorance. Your call.
