PORTLAND — A 33-year-old Oregon man on methamphetamine and suffering from mental health problems fired 12 nails from a nail gun into his head and survived.

The man, who has not been identified by medical officials for privacy reasons, went to an Oregon hospital last year complaining of a headache.

Doctors were surprised when they took X-rays and found the nails - six clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head. No one before is known to have survived having intentionally fired so many foreign objects into the head, according to the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery, where the case is detailed. The nails were not visible when doctors initially examined .........

Pretty amazing!

Just shows what a bitch meth can be, I suppose.

Hey next thing you know they will be claiming it is a form of acupuncture and good for you. I heard a while back about a man who killed himself by drilling several holes in his head with a electric drill (one did not do it)

I guess the Phineas Gage story is finally topped...I wonder if this guy with the nail gun had any personality changes as a result? But it would be hard to tell with all the meth abuse and so on.

We got tough heads there. All that rain makes our skull grow into super duper strong admantium.

It's true.

There was a story a few years ago where a guy severed his hand in a shop accident, so since he couldn't take the pain he shot himself in the head some 18 times with a nail-gun.

It didn't work.

I'll have my brother send me the particulars, he cut the article out and put it on his wall.

I've always wondered if associating stuff like this with Darwin (ie. Darwin Awards) could lend to the negative image of Darwinism?

Have you?

What do you think yourself?

You find this point interesting enough to raise it. Let's hear what you think.

I don't remember the details but that incident was a question in the original edition of Trivial Pursuit.

Do they use a special kind of nail in a nail gun?

It depends. Guns for small projects use T head brads. They are usually 18 gauge to 15 gauge in thickness with a small T head to fit the magazine and hold the wood. The brads are glued together in a stick of 100, usually. The sticks can be straight or angled. The smaller brads usually straight, the bigger ones angled and the gun magazines match. This is what I think the guy shot himself with, judging from the pics.

Bigger guns often use angled sticks of regular nails with clipped heads. The head of each nail has a little chunk missing from it to allow each nail to slide past the one behind it in the stick as they are driven into the wood. They also come in sticks of 100, held together by fine wire or paper.

Roofing nail guns usually use a coil of nails in a circualr magazine to accomodate their bigger heads.

From the article:
He became short-tempered and hostile when OHSU staff asked him how the injury occurred, according to the study. Psychological examinations showed he had "poor judgment and insight."
And who says psych examinations can't tell you anything that you can't conclude from checking out the multiple nails shot into his own head?

My guess would be larger-gauge (12-14) small-headed finishing nails.
