My prediction: He dodges the death penalty. Jurors decide the investigations were so inept that he could have walked onto a plane with a dozen sticks of dynamite strapped to his head and a sandwich sign saying, "I'm going to blow up this plane," and they still wouldn't have figured it out.

Nah, he's toast. These things basically amount to the prosecution making a case for aggravating circumstances, which will include his defiance and lack of remorse, and bringing victims' families in to testify how he shattered their lives. Expect to hear recountings of the last phone calls and to see lots of pictures of the victims at their daughters' birthday parties, and so on.

Then the defense gets to make the case for mitigating circumstances, which probably will amount to nothing better than "He's crazier than Michael Jackson."

By the time it's over, even Mother Theresa would want to have him hollowed out and used as a condom by the demon Thorn-Cocked Gulbuth the Rampant.

He'll go to the gallows (or whatever) happy in the conviction that he's going to his 72 virgins. I hope Judge Brinkema has the good sense to specify, as a condition of his execution, that he be stripped by a pair of naked menstruating prostitutes, who will smear his body with pig grease and stuff a pork sausage in his mouth before they give him the injection. I don't want him going to his death a contented martyr.

Which he is, from what I heard him and his relatives say. Doesn't make much for mitigating circumstances, though (and you forgot "he's had a miserable childhood" ).

From what I heard his family and lawyers say, he is not all that happy or convinced. And from the news reports in France, nobody is going to cry overmuch if he gets death.
