Cheney and Halliburton and the Iraq War

along comes the DPW deal starring our Secretary of the Treasury
(the guy who signs our money) John Snow who chaired the committee which approved the deal when he should have recused himself and DPW senior executive Dave Sanborn who is now the U.S. Martime Administrator ... both with ties to DPW

Because if Tamiflue was not being stockpiled and the bird flu broke out the same person would write about how Bush let us down because he didn't stockpile Tamiflu, which while it was not perfect was the best thing we had a certainly better than nothing etc. etc.

People like this are starting from the point that Bush = Evil. They are not interested in any sort of objective look at the situation.

Anyhow the feminist peace network? That alone implies a fantasy world view.

No, but he tried just like he tried by issuing his veto threat on holding up DPW
from taking over our ports. This Presidency, it seems, alweays ends up striving to take advantage of its "powers" to enrich its cronies.

Gilead stock jumped from around $34 a share to $61 a share in the past 12 months.

It's got to stop and a line has to be drawn somewhere.


I put this in science instead of politics since this is about where science and politics interesect and more importantly whether they should. Whether or not a product extracted from a Chinese spice (star anise found in Chinese 5-spice powder) works or not, while important, should not be influenced by the people working in top roles in this administration.


There is a radical call out there from the health professions that should a bird flu pandemic erupt they would assume command and override political interference.

Is this an excellent example of why that should be the case?

Post facts --> Bush = Evil. Just cut to the Liberals always say Bush = Evil and then you can be dismissive of the facts. All criticism of Dear Leader is invalid because critics hate him. Repeat after me: Facts > Bush Bad > to say Bush Bad is invalid > Facts are irrelevant. Mind of madness.

No. It's an excellent example of what happens when we, (the people) vote a bunch of self-serving idiots into power in the first place.
Note the word "vote" . As in "democracy".

Doctors as a group are no smarter or more honest than anyone else.

If there was a radical call out there from the Mafia that they should run the IRS , would that be a good move?
Actually, they would probably do a better job of collecting all the taxes...

No I get disturbed by the lack of perspective. I guess the idea of the politically connected lining their pockets was invented by Bush and Cheney?

But I know this is not cherry picking for the sake of Bush hating. I know if I search for the OP on this board I will find all his/her posts that are critical of all sides of the political spectrum.

It really isn't that any one incident is right wrong or indifferent. After 8 years of anti Clinton insanity from the moonbat right and 6 years so far of Bush hating from the moonbat left I am fatigued.

How should people react when we get a drawn out crisis due to oral sex or constantly here Bush compared to Hitler.

I think I am just suffering from hatred fatigue.

I conclude you don't know the same ones I know. I could tell you some stories...:D

I doubt medics are any better at large scale logistics and project management than politicians and civil servants. Most doctors are no more epidemiologists for instance than you or I. The medical community should assuredly be involved in planning for / coping with an epidemic, but I truly do not think they should be in charge of such an operation.

But that is not "as a group." That is evaluating as individuals.

Yeah, there are not so smart doctors. But least smart doctors are heck of a lot smarter than the least smart of all society. Of course, remember that includes the mentally retarded.

Sure, there are lots of ways to define "smart," but look at things like even grades in college, and just to get into med-school, you have to be within the top, say, 50% (to be conservative). Thus, to get into med school you have to be in the top half of college students. And that is just to get in. The average is, by definition, higher than that.

And I think the top 50% cutoff is very conservative. Top 25% is probably more reasonable.

You underestimate what it takes to become a doctor. A disproportionate number of doctors were high school valedictorians. A disproportionate number were tops in their undergraduate studies. They were the ones getting As in organic chemistry. No, they aren't all geniuses, but compared to the overall population, with all those top people, as a group they are among the smartest.

NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

Rumsfeld served as Gilead (Research)'s chairman from 1997 until he joined the Bush administration in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.

The forms don't reveal the exact number of shares Rumsfeld owns, but in the past six months fears of a pandemic and the ensuing scramble for Tamiflu have sent Gilead's stock from $35 to $47. That's made the Pentagon chief, already one of the wealthiest members of the Bush cabinet, at least $1 million richer.

Rumsfeld isn't the only political heavyweight benefiting from demand for Tamiflu, which is manufactured and marketed by Swiss pharma giant Roche. (Gilead receives a royalty from Roche equaling about 10% of sales.) Former Secretary of State George Shultz, who is on Gilead's board, has sold more than $7 million worth of Gilead since the beginning of 2005.

Another board member is the wife of former California Gov. Pete Wilson.

"I don't know of any biotech company that's so politically well-connected," says analyst Andrew McDonald of Think Equity Partners in San Francisco.
What's more, the federal government is emerging as one of the world's biggest customers for Tamiflu. In July, the Pentagon ordered $58 million worth of the treatment for U.S. troops around the world, and Congress is considering a multi-billion dollar purchase. Roche expects 2005 sales for Tamiflu to be about $1 billion, compared with $258 million in 2004."
