French student protests

Besides, there is really nothing wrong with banning people from playing loud music on public transport anyway. It's anti-social behaviour that would probably get Sharron's knickers in a twist if Burnham was fine with it.
Ban people talking on their phones on public transport while they're at it.

Indeed! Set the tumbrels rolling to Madam Guillotine! Off with their chattering heads!!!

*ahem* sorry, got a bit carried away there.
A few years ago we had a massive son et lumière about the Révolution and the Napoleonic period in the castle gardens and the local authorities set up a guillotine as a prop for certain scenes. Many, many people amused themselves by drawing up little lists, Gilbert & Sullivan style.

I've never understood why people are concerned about htis. Are they annoyed that 2 people on public transport are conversing? Or is it only a problem if one of them is elsewhere.

IMO, two people having a conversation is just the sound of a conversation. If you hear only half the conversation it's just noise. If it's in a language I don't know I tend to just consider it noise, too. Or if someone's just ranting or talking really loudly, or if they're the only one doing the talking for 99% of the conversation. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who are on the phone on public transport here tick one or more of these boxes.

I only see it as a problem when they speak loudly (which they usually do, because they know the recipient is far away), and/or they use the loudspeaker (which has a different, and more irritating sound than a human voice).

I find it less annoying if the half of the conversation I'm hearing is in a language I don't speak. That way I'm not distracted by trying to guess what the other half is saying. It's super annoying to hear half of a juicy conversation! "Yeah, it was green salsa. No, a chainsaw. Screaming and kicking. The fire was later. Six, maybe seven dogs? Not sure, everyone was in those purple robes. Sheila said not contagious. Why would the government of Sweden? That school fell into a sinkhole. Grandma's will. No, it was a monkey. The shark was Danny or little Escandelle. Okay, see you. The good epergne."
