Cont: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine part 9

Starling does not work in Russia, so it has never been used for attacks on Yandex data centres.

I don't think that's entirely true, per the NYT:
The Starshield limitations, if they continue, could hobble Ukraine’s military operations. Starshield terminals are used for nearly everything the Ukrainian Army deploys on the battlefield: the cars that carry troops and matériel, the drones that ferry food and water to soldiers at the front, and the attack drones that fly long distances to hit Russian positions.

If the NYT is accurate then they were almost assuredly used to attack the Yandex data centers. I would be shocked if it weren't.

I also find it pretty ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ odd that this all just happens to take place on the night that Russia launches more ballistic missiles at Kyiv than ever before.

I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence - V

When the Dems take over I expect this to be investigated aggressively and relentlessly because I have a sneaking ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ suspicion that the miserable fat ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ sack of dog ◊◊◊◊ in the WH coordinated this somehow in hopes of making Ukraine give up. It's exactly something ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ stupid enough for Trump to think up and expect to work.

God ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ damn I hate that ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ sack of ◊◊◊◊.

I doubt the NYT is accurate, but "Russian positions" implies troop concentrations along the front, not commercial and industrial targets deep in the Russian interior.

Drones used to attack Russian positions have to fly (relatively) long distances because their launch points need to be reasonably safe from Russian medium-range artillery and drone attacks. They're using Starlink for guidance over the contested parts of Ukraine, the front line, where the Russian positions are, that they're trying to attack.

Meanwhile, long-range cruise missiles like the Tomahawk have used a combination of terrain-following and inertial navigation to reach targets over truly long distances, since more than forty years ago. Datacenters are fixed locations with known coordinates. The Ukrainians are probably clever enough to find them without realtime GPS guidance or Starlinked guidance.

Since everyone seems to agree that Starlink isn't available in Russia, the most likely explanation is that the NYT reporter and editor don't know what they're talking about. The second most likely explanation is that they managed to get it right, but you misread and/or misunderstood their reporting.

Journalist: “Regarding Russia: According to Ukraine, Russia struck six energy facilities yesterday. What information do you have?”

Trump: “Well, Ukraine struck many facilities the day before. But Ukraine attacked... Russia did not violate the ceasefire.”

Worst thing is, unlike the waste of space that is the orange swamp monster, this POS is relatively young and will probably be with us for a long time yet.

Nah, Elon has is no friend of Russia. He just put all his money on Trump, so he has to dance to his song. He is also greatly limited by what the administration allows him to do .. Starlink is obviously sensitive technology. And also Ukraine is not the customer. US army is, and some proxy customers like Poland. In other words .. Trump has the last word in both allowing Starlink to be used, or denying it. Elon can just post tweets to stay on his good side.

They're far worse than that, they're murderers, traitors and hypocrites.
Elon, Trump, and those who support them are, more specifically. This isn't some new state of affairs, though. This is just reminding me again of Trump's betrayal of the Kurds, though. Quite literally, he actively worked to disarm them before abandoning them to the hands of those who desired to commit genocide to them.

If the Dems take over. Oh, it seems pretty certain now that they will win at least one house of Congress. But will they actually take their seats on January 3rd? Not if Trump can help it. Lawsuits challenging results are a certainty. Martial Law is not out of the question.

Basically handed Afganistan to the Taliban, too, undoing 20 years of democratization.

I'm not as worried as some. I'm positive Trump will try ◊◊◊◊, and he'll make a big show of it, but the courts held last time. I don't even see the SCOTUS allowing martial law to stand, we aren't under any attack but I definitely see it being a ◊◊◊◊ show.

Elon Musk has suggested that the US government may be behind restrictions on the speed at which some of Ukraine's weapons can travel and stay connected to SpaceX's Starlink internet network.

Musk said that Starshield, the military-grade sister service to Starlink, is controlled by the US government, and "any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately [the US president]".

Musk - writing on X - had been responding to pleas from Ukrainian officials to restore connectivity, including from Zelensky who told UK media: "I hope that it's a mistake, maybe (a) huge technical problem. I don't know, but we are asking to... switch (it) on."

"We are behind you and that will not change," Andy Burnham has told Volodymyr Zelensky, as he hosted the Ukrainian leader in Downing Street.

Zelensky was in London as part of efforts to reinforce backing from allies after Donald Trump called for him to go and lifted sanctions on Russian diesel.

The prime minister said Ukraine was willing to discuss an energy ceasefire proposed by the US president but said Russia's response had been "further attacks on critical national infrastructure in Ukraine".

Zelensky said: "Our people, we survived and continue to do this because we have strong partners and I'm very proud that we have one of the strongest partners in our history and it's your people, Andy."

The Ukrainian president was greeted with a hug from Burnham, cheers from civil servants and a rare honour guard as he arrived in Downing Street.

Ahead of Zelensky's arrival, No 10 announced it would speed up delivery of lightweight multirole missiles to Ukraine, which have been used to bring down Russian drones.

@Dr.Sid pointed this out before, but the claims about the strikes on Yandex data centres disrupting far-right influence networks is likely a myth. Yandex is Russia’s Google and operates maps and browsers and a kind of Uber service as well. The “bots” are mostly ordinary search engine crawlers.

Renee DiResta has a good post about it, going into specific claims about AfD and how actual disinfo bot networks tend to work:

It's not hard to join the dots. Kushner in Miami told them to take the deal and surrender to Russia. Russia then starts the biggest ballistic missile attacks ever. Trump then blames Ukraine for everything on Trump social.

What is happening inside the Trump regime with the people who know this is all ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊.
