Does 'rape culture' accurately describe (many) societies?

Taming [lust]? You mean, like a wild animal? Beaten down until it is meek and compliant?
Come on now. Mastering our appetites, rather than letting our appetites master us, is considered a virtue, by pretty much every system of moral philosophy humans have ever devised. I think even philosophical hedonism generally asks for some degree of self-discipline.

Poem's rhetorical jutsu isn't strong enough to be worth pretending that's not a thing.

I'm not sure this is all that true. The Ancient Greeks and the Roman's were not exactly prudes. There have been societies in Asia and the South Pacific where sexual freedom was encouraged not discouraged.

I have regretted almost nothing I have done in my life, except the things I didn't do.

Even among modern religions, sex within marriage is considered healthy and desirable.

We control our sexual appetites sufficiently to ensure that we only engage in sexual activities that are safe and consensual, but if we feel truly comfortable with out partner(s) there's absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of lust.

Doesn't say a single thing about any country that got it right.

And I'll answer again, because I'm generous like that. I don't know how to write a curriculum. It's not within my competencies, and I strongly suspect it's not within yours either. I've given a quite detailed set of aspirations, which I would hand to any curriculum expert who believes that they may be able to get such a curriculum adopted, but as it turns out nobody's asking me because I'm not an expert.

I can't answer your question and you know that - that's why you ask it.
Let's get this clear, education is the silver bullet (your words) that fixes all the problems identified in that Guardian article you posted, but you have no idea (given the failure in the UK and, indeed, all countries apparently) how that might become efficacious? Some thirty posts trumpeting the effectiveness of education and you don't have a single idea?
Just like I know that you can't answer my question about when you last accidentally stumbled across porn.
A year ago:
Whilst I agree that is true for us adults - I suspect it's different experience for youngsters. It's possible that many young people are lying - but, either way, they are still seeing porn.

De Souza isn't making this up.

No.
You are adding a "because" in there that Helen never said.
?
I think Poem needs to learn the difference between a headline "national emergency" and a real national emergency. Headlines are crafted to draw attention. Actual genuine national emergencies are declared by national leaders in order to galvanise action.
Don't disparage the NPCC without a good reason.
This is incorrect. Would you like to know more? I could explain with examples of very successful species where the majority of individuals do not reproduce. I wonder if you can think of any on your own. :ant:
Ok, go ahead.

The natural way of things is not axiomatically something to aspire to. It's a system that works entirely on what's good enough to propogate genes in a particular environment. Many natural things are beautiful, sure. The natural way of things for humans is for mothers to die from around 3.5 out of every 1000 births.
Indeed, that is why we would not cite Bonobos as justification for a sexual free-for-all.

The point is that humanity has inherited the same baseline that is common in all species - heterosexual predominance for existential reasons.

No we don't - we upload some of it and propagate that by massive consumption to the point that it is easily available to kids.

Effectively zero control.

We don't cite it because it's natural (unless we're directly countering 'it's unnatural!') we cite it because we can show they use it in a way that improves their social cohesion; an example that sexual contact can be used that way by an intelligent social animal.

This is massively wrong unless you add a few words to narrow things way down from 'all species.' But yes our evolutionary line has been using heterosexual attraction as a driver for reproduction for quite some time.

Don't you have access to the forum's OnlyFans pages?
I will say that it's clear that far more people make and share porn now than ever, but as far as I can tell the vast majority of that stuff has nothing to do with Poem's concerns. It's a bunch of exhibitionists and horny folks, some of them getting a little side cash from monetizing their activities, some of them just having fun and fishing for compliments.

I'm not concerned by the commodification and denigration of intimacy and sex? You are not concerned? - the destruction of the very essence of human romantic relationships?

We can tell or educate our children all we want that porn isn't real...but, essentially, they are watching a redefinition of values on a monumental scale. Kids know that real sex is taking place.

And that constitutes a huge amount of sexual scripting. A majority of boys in the UK see porn as realistic (40% of girls) and a significant minority say that it gives them ideas to try out.

And some here say porn isn't a problem?

Sex is not the very essence of human relationships. Sexual reproduction is a characteristic we share with not just with all of the Kingdom Animalia but also with almost all of the Domain Eukaryota.

The essence of human relationships is how and what we communicate with each other.
