Merged Australian Politics / Australian election

Guess what she said this time.

Well, she actually said it a year ago, so it's interesting that it's been revived now.

I'll be interested to see how it plays out. I can see lots of voters liking what was said, because I've heard those sentiments a lot. We have exactly the same situation here when people refer to Maori as Neolithic. Technically true, but still racist.

Incurring a hate-crime conviction for extreme racism would certainly make for great headlines!

It's racist, but nowhere near the level of hate speech. I'm sure she'll double down by stating it's factual, which again, is technically correct.

Like the "traitor" business, it's stupid and counter-productive to overstate the case, and suggesting it's potentially actionable is nonsense.

Good catch.

Don't be too sure. The government (ie minister) has the ability to ban political parties on "hate speech" grounds without due process. They have already done this to the White Australia party who are currently challenging the law in the High Court.

If (as expected) they lose, then the government would be able to ban ON on the same grounds (if they have the nerve). Maybe that is why Pauline's year old remarks are suddenly front page news.

Parliament can act against her. Like it or not MPs can be punished by parliament.

He was talking about a criminal conviction.

You're dreaming. Nothing she said is actionable and she'd kill it in court, while garnering enormous support from people seeing government over-reach.

This is a classic storm in a teacup that is being given legs by her opponents. Has Australia learned nothing from Trump's ascendancy?

I'm not disputing the existence, I'm saying that ON and Hansen are nowhere near that level.
The more you study the legislation, the more bizarre it becomes. The threshold is remarkably low and the minister doesn't have to reveal the advice he received about a group. (The White Australia party is listed because some people might feel threatened by their policies). And supporting such a group (eg by giving money for a legal challenge) could see you get 15 years in jail.

One might think that ON and Pauline Hanson are too well entrenched to be listed as a "hate group". It would cause massive riots if the government tried. But with Albo, you never know . . .

Why isn't it? Do they expect to get no money back from this loan?
Are you serious, or taking the piss? What do you think would happen if Labor gave or lent money to a company Albo had an interest in? Because this is exactly what happened.

Albo would be asked to resign. That ON thinks it can simply laugh this away says a lot about their lack of integrity.

Those are two different words that require a separate answer for each.
For me, it is about the bottom line. How much risk is there with this loan? YMMV.
You are, amazingly, assuming that Ashby will ever pay back that money, even in the remote possibility that a ON grub will make money out of a distillery.

I assume nothing. All I know is what I have read in the article which describes this as a loan "to support future campaigns and the party’s expanding overheads". Revenues are expected to rise from an annual average of $105,796 to $400,000 - $500,000.

This may be pure BS and the money has disappeared down a black hole forever but the article which you linked to doesn't support your assertion that this is a free no-strings-attached gift of $56,000.

Again, seriously? ON has a history of dishonest behaviour. But the point you are stubbornly ignoring is that ON funds are given to people who run the party and who may benefit from the gift. Do you really think that Albo and Taylor would survive if they did the same thing?
