Notable Passings and other milestones

Gary "Angry" Anderson, frontman of Rose Tattoo, an Australian icon. Passed away at age 79, in hospital in Germany of cardiac arrest, while on tour.

He lived loud and hard, never held back, said what was in his heart, and was never far from controversy for one reason or another. But inside the little bloke was a very kind person.

I recall back in the 80's when he played a crummy below-ground dive venue in East Sydney that was about the size of half a tennis court, with about a hundred punters shoulder to shoulder. The wall of amps and the Tatts were down one end, Angry started screaming, and they turned it up way past 11. There was nowhere for the sound to go but through you. The roof nearly came off the ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ place three floors above! Only time I heard them live...I barely lived through it. Onya, mate.

Marjoe Gortner, 82.

From Wikipedia:

Hugh Marjoe Ross Gortner (January 14, 1944 – October 2, 2026) was an American evangelist preacher and actor. He first gained public attention during the late 1940s when his parents arranged for him to be ordained as a preacher at age four due to his extraordinary speaking ability, making him the youngest known in that position to this day. As a young man, he preached on the revival circuit and brought celebrity to the revival movement.[1]

As an adult, Gortner, having grown regretful, admitted that his days as a child evangelist were filled with fake stories, lies and the sales of fake "holy" or healing items. Marjoe (1972) is a behind-the-scenes documentary about him and the lucrative business of Pentecostal preaching, in which he actively participated. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film, and it became known as a prominent criticism of Pentecostal preaching.[2] Gortner had an acting career from the 1970s to the 1990s, which included a main role in the space opera film Starcrash (1978) and guest spots on several TV series, and also released a musical studio album titled Bad but Not Evil in 1972.

He starred in the documentary film Marjoe, a documentary exposing the world of evangelism and the suckering of millions of people for their money, and also his journey from being a child Pentecostal preacher to atheism.

I remember him from the Kojak movie and found out about his weird childhood. Fascinating stuff. Oddly, I just thought about him a few days ago and looked him up. He was alive then, but that was probably before he died. It must mean something.

Bestselling author and former politician Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86.

Archer sold more than 300 million books in his five-decade writing career, including the Clifton Chronicles and Kane and Abel, and has often set the novels in his home town of Wellington, Somerset.

In a statement, Archer's publisher HarperCollins said the author died "suddenly and peacefully at home" on Monday.

The former Conservative MP was jailed for perjury in 2001 after being found guilty of lying and cheating in his 1987 libel case against the Daily Star.

Also suspected, at the least, of plagiarism with one of his short stories sharing significant similarities with one by another author.

Seems to have been very sudden.

I can’t believe that Jeffrey Archer - who was always so alive - is suddenly dead. We had a wonderful day together yesterday - as anyone who was there will tell you, he was in brilliant form on stage yesterday celebrating the publication of his 50th and final best-selling novel.

Apparently I started a thread about him back in 2012:

Saw Rose Tattoo open for The Angels at an outdoor show in a suburb of Melbourne in early '87. Took the train down from Shepparton with a couple of buddies from my high school. We were on the front row up against the fence, right in front of Angry. Most of the details of that night are a blur, but the concert itself stands out as one of my favorites ever.
