What I want to know is why the industry can't regulate itself. The movie industry and the comic book industry were both quick to institute their own self-regulation frameworks, back in the day. Now these clowns seem to be taking the approach of, if the government doesn't stop them, they'll have no choice but to keep being evil.
That said, it's a safe bet that Russia and China will never give up this kind of research, so holding it back in the US and Europe probably isn't the answer. I think the answer is probably even more and faster research into both offensive and defensive AI, and I hope organizations like the NSA are already way ahead of me and the AI bros on this.
Unfortunately, that answer is pretty much guaranteeing a doom spiral into an AI-controlled world where humanity exists as rats in the walls, but what are you going to do? The genie is out of the bottle.
Honestly the AI bros should have thought of this decades ago, when the futurists had already put the writing on the wall.
