Merged Australian Politics / Australian election

More good news. ON and the coalition has superannuation in their sights, with Lib senator Bragg saying teens should not get it, and Hanson and Joyce saying people should get access at any time, saying things like “after all it’s their money “ (it isn’t, of course). If I was Labor I would loudly proclaim that these parties will not stop until the system is destroyed. And this could be on the cards, as deep down they hate seeing ordinary, not rich people retiring well.

Liberal senator Andrew Bragg provoked the compulsory super stoush last week by declaring it “one of the biggest public policy failures since federation” and likening super for teens to super for cats and dogs.

For those not aware our superannuation system is widely popular and works exceptionally well, earning 10%+ interest in many years.

One Nation has won the Secret Harbour by election in WA. Luke Herdegen (ON) secured 39% of the primary vote. Together with the preferences from the Libs (Ryan Robertson got 17.3% of the primary vote), this gives a 2PP result of Labor - 43% and ON - 57%. Although the next federal election is not for 2 years, Secret Harbour was a "safe" Labor seat (held since 1989) so this result has some serious implications for the next election.

Considering how closely ON has aligned itself with Donald Trump, it has become a lot harder to laugh at the stupidity of American voters.

Like all ON members usually do, they will disgrace and humiliate themselves while in office. Then they will get tossed at the next election. Also, one single ON member in WA is hardly "some serious implications for the next election" for Labor, who hold 45 of 59 seats in the state parliament.
  • Labor Party: 45 seats
  • Liberal Party: 6 seats
  • National Party: 6 seats
  • One Nation: 1 seat
  • Independents / Crossbench: 1 seat

You are missing the point. If ON can snatch a seat which was previously safe for Labor then all Labor (and Liberal) held seats are in jeopardy (at both the state and the federal level).

"Disgracing" and "humiliating" themselves doesn't seem to be doing ON much harm.

About the only thing that will save us from ON is the two years we have until the next election. Let us hope they do self-destruct in the meantime. Otherwise Australia is in trouble.

I think that the major parties need to realize that the traditional election ads aren't working any more. They need to get to the influencers and social media platforms and tailor their message in such a way that younger voters will take notice.

Wrong on a couple of accounts. By elections are notorious for protest votes. Secondly, ON candidates have a history of bailing out and turning independent.

Labor will win federally, I have no doubt. I still think Victoria is in play, with a Labor/independent majority.

Don't stick your head in the sand. This is not some typical by election swing. This is an unprecedented result and one that foretells doom if it is repeated nationally at a federal election. Only the "unrepresentative swill" would stand in their way (since ON can't get a majority in the Senate).

So there's one in, one out, in the same week.
Absolutely nothing will stop dyed-in-the-wool Republican supporters from supporting Trump - no matter what he does. I suspect that the same is true foe dyed-in-the-wool ON supporters.

The question is whether enough ON supporters are willing to change their vote before the next election (if ON antics get too much) or has the American stupidity taken too strong a hold on Australian voters?

The voters don't matter for ON. Even if they get voted in, they still manage to disgrace or dismiss themselves in short order. Most are like Beetroot, a bunch of very silly, potty-mouthed, uncontrolled morons. The others are just on the band-wagon, and will jump ship at the first sign of hard work required or any political blowback. One Nation is Poorlene's precious baby only. It's there only to keep her relevant.

They matter very much for the outcome of the next election which is what my post was about.
Do you really think they can maintain discipline for nearly two years? Just today Hanson has made a deranged statement that Albo is “inciting violence” against her, when all he said is that they no answers.

When the heat rises and ON demonstrates they definitely have no answers, Hanson will approach Trump in incoherence and stupidity. And I really don’t think a majority will vote for stupidity.

They didn't make it one day. Secret Harbour win, followed by a defection. Same day...

Should have used present tense. And I suspect she wants to be more like Farage than Trump. At least he can string a sentence together, even if it is piffle.
