Fraud is monetary or pecuniary gain by intent to deceive. You don't know whether Arday was ever in a car crash or not. You are just assuming he's lying, and even if he was, it doesn't count as fraud. Before laying into someone because you don't believe their story, perhaps stop to think whether the problem lies with you, not them.

Having stopped to think about the Woody Brown situation, I've come to the conclusion that the problem lies with his mom and with Stanford, not with him or with me. I'm sure if you stop to think about it, you'll reach the same conclusion.

At least one of them was. He claimed he was a visiting professor at Ohio State University. He never was.

Jason Arday was a serial fabulist. The fact that he got actual advanced academic degrees and positions is a damning indictment of the educational establishment, it isn't justification for putting him in a position he was unqualified for.

Can't see you moaning about the dim Prince Charles and his Oxford degree, largely written by his Protection Officer, some claim.

King Charles doesn't have an Oxford degree, he has a Cambridge degree. And what's there to moan about? He did not receive any particular honors (seems to have graduated in the lower half of his class), and his current position has nothing to do with his educational achievement. Even assuming his degree was illegitimately obtained, I don't see how it would have made any difference had he not obtained it.

And when you quote others in a degree dissertation you refer to those quotes as quotes and reference who you have quoted from for every individual quote. Arday did not do this.

Look, if you're too emotionally fragile to drive responsibly after a breakup, and too mentally short-sighted to get your ◊◊◊◊ together before you get back behind the wheel, then you should absolutely be fined, and have your license suspended, just like for a DUI.

And if you're too mentally deficient to write your own ideas in your own words, then you have no business being an academic.

I haven't done a direct comparison of his text with the sources of alleged plagiarism, but I will say that the writing sucks. Even if he had plagiarized nothing at all, the writing is just terrible. It spends a lot of time saying basically nothing of substance, and saying it badly.

Here's the kicker, though: I bet he's not actually a standout in that regard.

John Moore Liverpool Uni carried out an investigation and concluded Arday did not ,(a) plagiarise, and (b) did not cheat. He passed his viva and PhD fairly and squarely.

• Claimed to have published a book that he never published.
• Claimed that when he was 30 years old, he ran 600 miles in 6 days, which would have been close to a world record.
• Claimed to have raised £5.5 million for charity, which he did not
• Claimed to have completed a relief mission in Brazil in 2006, which never actually happened.
• Claimed to have appeared in a documentary when he was 7 years old. The only problem is the documentary was broadcast 21 years before he was born
• Claimed to have been the victim of a non-existent intruder with a knife at Cambridge.
• Claimed to have held visiting professorships at the University of Glasgow and Ohio State University. This was a lie - he had never held those positions

Absolute rubbish. He wouldn't have been awarded his PhD unless they were satisfied. It's all above board, investigated and bona fide. Can I ask, why do you care a darn about the private life of some random professor? Do you take a close interest in all professors?

He didn't say he appeared in the '60's/70's 7-up TV programme. He was likely referring to a contemporary programme of the same name in his community circle. It's the name of a popular fizzy drink!!! Hardly esoteric. He was a prolific runner. Other marathon runners say his running claims are doable and not at all unusual. He was a professor at Glasgow. I dare say when he visited the USA he described himself as a 'visiting professor' colloquially. There might well have been threats made to him. Why are you so desperate to believe the far-right eugenicists without an iota of evidence?

What psychological comfort do you get from this person's public takedown? What crime did he ever commit?

Some of it was quite elaborate. He appears to have staged a final run-in of his last marathon, with up to 50 people accompanying him, and sent a press release to a local rag claiming all the rest of it.

There seems to be no evidence at all that he actually ran these 30 marathons, but staging that finish is an interesting ploy. There's no sign of a broken fibula, or a leg swollen to twice its normal size. He ran 600 miles from Edinburgh to London? I wonder what route he took, because Edinburgh to London is only about 400 miles. Again no record of such a feat. The 600 miles in six days was later amended to 12 days - one day on one day off. But again, no evidence. All these feats are possible, but anyone accomplishing them would be well-known in the ultra-long-distance running community and the performance would be evidenced. Nobody doubts Eddie Izzard, because he had cameras following him.

The only thing that seems to stand up is that he carried the Olympic torch in 2012. Claims of raising £5.5 million were rowed back to doing this as part of a syndicate he can't discuss because everyone else in it has signed a non-disclosure agreement. His behaviour doesn't square with autism - autistic people are generally hyper-truthful. I have not heard anyone say he was mute as a child, only one professional saying he had a mild developmental delay when he started school. The epilepsy, the brain tumours, the locked-in syndrome - it's absolutely the ravings of a fabulist.

This may be a mental illness. He tells himself Walter Mitty type stories and comes to believe them. He believes that challenges can only be due to racism and that reporting people who question him to the police is an appropriate response. But at the same time, deep down, he knew it was all fakery.

I wonder if the suicide was largely triggered by the imminent book launch. It's full of these fairy-stories, though interestingly some of the stories that were in the original book proposal didn't make it into the finished product. The next thing that was going to happen was that people were going to scour that book and look for evidence of his claims. Evidence he knew they would not find. The story would run and run. But mostly I think he had finally been forced to admit to himself that he'd been living a whole bunch of lies for decades, the persona he'd built up and curated wasn't who he really was, and he couldn't take it.

The people around him, who must have known all this, bear a large burden of responsibility for not telling him straight that he was inevitably going to be found out one day, and he'd be well advised to stop it.

I don't think his PhD committee examined his biographical claims. They are not all above board, and until recently they were not investigated.
