To be fair, the lawyer doesn't actually have a choice but to play that card. It being a political case is AFAIK the only reason why the court wouldn't decide to extradite them. The extradition treaty with the UK covers everything else, and the UK merely has to show probable cause for a trial. And they have more than that at this point. Without claiming it's political, the court pretty much has to stamp on it.
Of course, now it's on him to show that it's political. It's not just a magic word that gets one out of jail, or everyone would do it.

Yep. That's how pretrial detention works. There's going to be a whole series of formal meetings, to go over all the evidence and see if there's a case to be made.

I would be much more careful with the phrasing of the location when inciting to a protest. "In front of the courthouse" is probably OK. "At the courthouse" can get very problematic very fast if some berks decide to pull a January 6 inside it.
