Cuts to anti-AIDS aid take a toll in Africa

In its frenzy to slash foreign aid, the State Department cut spending on PEPFAR last year by 30 percent. Restrictions on spending were added, so no U.S. grants can go to organizations that provide or promote abortions, offer gender transition care or advocate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are given access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drugs, but not other high risk groups such as sex workers, gay men and intravenous drug users.

This has taken a toll. A survey released Tuesday by Amfar, the Foundation for AIDS Research, found that more than 1,700 HIV/AIDS service sites have closed. A second study claimed that more than 77,000 fewer children with HIV in 21 countries received needed treatment. A separate analysis in the journal Nature Health found a drop of more than 1.9 million people across 55 countries receiving site-level antiretroviral treatment, a 10.2 percent reduction.

Without U.S. funding, over 1 million additional infections are possible in South Africa over the next 20 years.

South Africa has been very specifically targeted because of its racist 'anti-white' policies.

I would like to beleive you but I have totally lost faith in the GOP to do the right thing.
On the other hand, I have seem some pure nonsense here, like Trump staging a Military coup. I don't think the Military would go along with him; it is not like he is really popular, and most of them take their oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constutuion very seriouly.
Having served in the US Army, I really dislike the whole "all soliderd are basically fascist" mentality a couple people here have.
 
I think it all comes down to the midterms. Trump clearly is gonna either 1) attempt to cancel them or 2) attempt to fix them. He has a better chance at (2) so that will involve lots of voter suppression moves, intimidation, and probably some weird October surprise move where he gets gas down to $1 a gallon a week before the election.
However, if he fails and the inevitable blue tsunami takes hold, I think that will be the end of the cult. Self preservation supersedes loyalty here.
The GOP will suddenly 'see the light' and declare him mentally unfit. Probably JD will take the lead since he has th most to gain from conviction.

I have to question his ablities to do those. He might try, but I think it is hard for hm to suceed. I hope you are joking about his bringing down gas to one dollar a gallon; that is not going to happen and I don't think he can impact gas prices much.
And from the polls, it is going to very hard to stop the blue wave, at least in the House.
Trump has lost it. He is doing lots of stupid things he wuld not have done a few years ago.
And cancelling the election is just plain impossible. Open violastion of a basic clause of the COnstituion. evne the court would rule against him.

He can't "cancel" the mid-terms—they're run by the individual states.

He can attempt to refuse to accept the results, but the machinery for swearing in the new senators and representatives will go ahead. Short of an extraordinary police action or military intervention, the new Congress will be seated and can govern.

Not to mention the midterm elections are mandated in the Constitution, as far as the House elections go.

There was a discussion awhile back how Trump can delay seating a Democratic Congress my having Mike Johnson act as a firewall and put off the swearing in. I doubt it would work for that long though.
