I don't know what the hell the solution is. I do know that giving Iran permanent control of the Stairs of Hormuz is simply not going to work. People will get tired of paying the blackmail eventually.

I think the odds are now in favor of a Ground war against Iran.
And don't think this does not scare the crap out of the GOP. That would seal their doom in November.
Without a ground force, I don't see him getting out without making major concessions. I think at minimum we need nuclear inspectors but beyond that everything's negotiable. Iranian leadership has shown no signs of giving up and it feels like they can hunker down for a long time.

A toll is not blackmail. 'Eventually' Iran will reduce the price according to what it's costing them to administer it, and shipping companies won't mind because it will be a piddling amount for them.
This is a war. Normal rules don't apply. Normally the US would be made to pay for the damage they did in Iran, but we all know this won't happen. Iran is doing the next best thing, making us pay a tiny bit more for oil going through the Strait.
Iran was never my enemy. This isn't about Trump either. I would be just as much against the US prosecuting this war if Biden or Harris was in charge.
One of the reasons Trump won the last election was that he promised not to start any wars and asserted that if Harris became president she would attack Iran. The one policy Trump had that I agreed with, he reneged on. This wasn't surprising though because Trump is weak when it comes to standing up to war hawks, just like most other US presidents (especially Republican presidents).

Not an unknown tactic.
When I was in the oil&gas industry, sub/contractor safety indexes were tracked publicly.
One large multinational boasted a zero fatality index, even though work related fatalities were known to have occurred.
Their rationalisation seems to be typical of the Pentagon’s approach,
“The dead are no longer employees, therefore their deaths can’t be recorded as an employee fatality”.

Why is Iran having the possibility to impose a toll any different from other countries with a similar choice?
Not to mention the fact that this was not an issue until Operation Epstein Fury?

As for the 'international water' thing, it has been pointed out to you, repeatedly, that there are portions of the strait that are not international waters, but rather an overlap of national waters.
And yes, Iran is a brutal theocracy. But so is Saudi Arabia and the west has no problem working with them. Israel is a nation repeatedly and aggressively invading their neighbours while carrying out open ethnic cleansing, and is called a close ally by the US and most of the west.
On the other hand Iran has never in the last 100 years used it's army to invade others, only to defend itself against a series of invasions.
I also do not fear them taking over the Middle East. Sure they want to be a regional power, but if a nation of the size and wealth of the US cannot even occupy failed nations like Afghanistan, what hope will a nation like Iran have? Don't forget, to most other Muslim nations Iran are not fellow Muslims, but rather apostates who follow the wrong faith. Now if there is a nation that could use it's wealth and possession of holy places that could attempt to take over the ME (I doubt they could, but still) it is, again, Saudi Arabia. You know, the country Trump wants to help creating nuclear weapons.

Seems like their relationship has become increasingly fractured since that Alaska fiasco and made Trump look pretty foolish and ineffective. So I think they're starting a falling out but purely for vanity reasons.
