Split Thread What is Communism

The Atlantic on bsky, July 10, 2026
Despite Trump's railing against Marxism, @jonathanbchait.bsky.social argues that “Trump has more in common with Communists than his hostile rhetoric lets on”:

It should have been a blank page, but it isn¨t. The intro isn't paywalled.

@jonathanbchait.bsky.social making a serious bid for Abjectly Stupid Reactionary White Boy of the Year. Competition is fierce, but we believe in you Jonathan!

The Overton window has moved so far right into fascism that even suggesting a fair and equitable existence in this country accuses people of being communist, which is insane and inaccurate

Ewan Sutherland on bsky, July 10, 2026
Any self-respecting Communist would hang Trump from the nearest lamppost. Trump engaged in democratic centralism in the manner of Stalin. His state capitalism could be any dictator, left or right.

Gilkeshda on bsky, July 10, 2026
Trump a cult of personality that would have made Stalin jealous, but not sure what that has to do with communism.

JGerg on bsky, July 11, 2026
Trump making ◊◊◊◊ worse for the working class => Marxism.
Ok sure Atlantic …. sure
JBerg on bsky, July 11, 2026
Marxism, typically anti-imperialist while Trump is trying to maintain/expand empire.
Marxism, a movement of the working class while Trump is a billionaire doing stuff for the billionaire class.
Berg on bsky, July 11, 2026
Sure Atlantic … sure Trump is a Marxist. You’re just lucky your readers were brought up during the red scare.

By far the best one:

But this one's also great:

Seems to me that the element which makes "communism" isn't oppression or an authoritarian state. It's simply an economic system that allows for severely restricted or no economic freedom/free enterprise. Contemporary China, despite the ruling party name, isn't a communist country. People there can start private businesses and get super rich. But they can't criticism the government. However, communism requires oppression and an authoritarian state, as most people would not be subjected to it willingly.

Marxism has never been anti-imperialist, let alone typically so.

The goal is a global empire, a dictatorship of the proletariat. It's no accident the anthem is called "the Internationale".

There are no truly private businesses in China. It is not a capitalist economy under an authoritarian state. It's not Soviet-style communism, but I would still call it communism. There are communist party members installed as communist party members within every large business in China.

Right, but they're there to make sure people keep in line politically. They're not running the business.

Its probably better described as corporatist or state capitalism, they don't quite fit either. I hear rumors that Xi is actually a believing communist, which may be true as he has made a lot of moves to reduce the market and capitalist elements in China.

It is authoritarian.
There is some private enterprise, but it does seem as that only goes as far as the government lets them. They are free to run their businesses as they see fit and even keep the profits so long as the toe the government line and do as they are told when they are told to. It certainly isn't what Marx, Engles, or Mao had in mind as far as I can tell.

What is Communism?
It appears to be Trump's Jeopardy 'answer' to:
Wanting to Blow Up Mount Rushmore!
Trump Claims Communists Want to "Blow Up" Mount Rushmore (Late Night with Seth Meyers on YouTube, July 24, 2026 – 16 min.)
Seth addresses Trump saying that communists want to take down Mount Rushmore and more in his monologue for Thursday, July 23, before taking a closer look at senators grilling Pete Hegseth over the Iran war and Elon Musk making an AI version of The Odyssey.

Are Trump's policies... socialistic? 'Most economically interventionist' govt of my life: Economist (MS NOW on YouTube, July 31, 2026 – 7:15 min.)
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's prediction of a 2026 economic boom has fallen short as Americans grapple with higher costs due to President Trump's tariffs and war with Iran. This comes as some of the Trump administration's policies are being compared to socialism. MS NOW Senior White House Reporter Vaughn Hillyard and University of Michigan Professor of Economics Justin Wolfers join Laura Barrón-López to discuss.

3:27–> So is this another example of socialism?
– Laura, a long time ago, we used to begin our Economics one classes by defining capitalism and socialism. And then a mixed market economy, which is what the US is. We use markets and we also use government.
And then I stopped teaching that, because I thought everyone understood it and we didn't need to just repeat ourselves on pointless, mindless things. And then you add on these things are more often thrown around as slogans than as anything else.
So I'm going to use a different word just because socialism, communism, all that, there's so much baggage.
The debate here is about: How interventionist is the government?
Historically, the Republican Party was the party of small government.
It didn't want the government telling you or telling businesses what to do.
This, though, is the most economically interventionist government of my lifetime, and I'm 53 years old.

No, I don't, but it's what idiots think socialist governments are all about.
Others think "the Republican Party was the party of small government."
It never was. It was always about big government. The only thing they wanted to decrease was measures that benefitted ordinary people, very poor ordinary people, in particular. That was what the wanted to minimize. That was what DOGE was supposed to accomplish.
But don't worry, even Republicans can come to their senses. They're not a lost cause. At least, some of them aren't. They just have to learn to think outside of the box of fundamentalist religious bigotry:
Former Republican Explains Why She Became a Socialist (on YouTube, Aug 6, 2026 – 2 min.)
A former Republican reveals what pushed her toward democratic socialism and Democratic candidates. She challenges the beliefs she once held and explains why her political views changed over time. Her transformation is sparking debate about economic inequality, party loyalty, and what causes voters to completely rethink their politics.

This one is brilliant!
And so short!!!

How to Respond When Everything Is Communism Now (@IamBossi on YouTube, Aug 20, 2026 – 2:18 min.)
Apparently everything is communism now and leading to “a life of hell.” So today’s lesson of Bossi's Finishing School teaches you how to respond.
Because if we’re going to label something, we should at least have a basic idea of what it means.
Class is in session.
C.U. Next. Thursday

Step 1: Check under the Bed for Communism
Step 2: Introduce Him to the Concept of Public Services
Step 3: Hand Him a Mirror

"So it's interesting that collective funding is called public safety when it buys a police car but communism when it buys a child lunch." :ROFLMAO:

Bossi's YouTube channel.
I had never heard of her until now.
Her collection of shorts.
Many great titles. I've only listened to this one so far, but I already look forward to next Thursday!

The only time I hear people calling collective funding communism is when progressives try to tell me I'm a communist for believing taxation is a legitimate role of government.

You'll have to take it up with your fellow Republicans:
Mitch McConnell is reportedly opposing free school lunches: 'Kids are going to have less on their plates,' Biden's agriculture secretary says (BusinessInsider, Mar 8, 2022)
The Washington Post reported on Monday that some Republican lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, are opposing the inclusion of a pandemic-era free school lunch measure in the government funding package, according to sources familiar.
It's probably too late to take it up with McConnell.

14 GOP-led states have turned down federal money to feed low-income kids in the summer. Here’s why (AP, Feb 16, 2024)
Lower-income families with school-age kids can get help from the federal government paying for groceries this summer, unless they live in one of the 14 states that have said no to joining the program this year.
The reasons for the rejections, all from states with Republican governors, include philosophical objections to welfare programs, technical challenges due to aging computer systems and satisfaction with other summer nutrition programs reaching far fewer children.

Republican Calls Kids Freeloaders for Wanting Free School Lunch (TNR, Jan 28, 2025)
Representative Rich McCormick has a bonkers defense for letting kids go hungry.
Representative Rich McCormick argued Tuesday against free school lunches because they give kids “incentives to stay at home and not work.”

Wondering if there are businesses in the USA that are completely free of government regulation and taxation?

The Big Dog has left the building – in fact, he did so years ago – but I finally understand how he could get the idea that Das Kapital by Karl Marx, books that are all about economy and not at all about religion, superstition or atheism, was the 'atheist Bible.'
This video helped me understand:

Drew McCoy usually makes pretty long videos, but they are also usually worthwhile. This one definitely was. And I actually spent more time than watching it than just the 44 minutes because I had to pause to take in all the Chick tracts and other fundamentalist Christian and CIA anti-communist propaganda.
I assume that this other recent video from him, American Christianity Is a Capitalist Cult (July 14, 2026 – 28 min.) will be just as interesting and enlightening, but I haven't watched it yet.
